My 18 year old cat, who has been living with diabetes for 9 years now and is fairly stable on Lantus, is now showing signs of CKD. I'll probably take him to the vet soon, just to be sure, but in the meantime would like to hear your thoughts on what food I should change him too, if at all. He's on Fancy feast and Friskies (liver) pates. Is there anything better for this new situation?

I wrote a condo about feeding raw to older kitties that pertains to cats with diabetes and CKD in the Think Tank forum: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/raw-feeding-senior-kitties.248460/

My Ruby's kidney values have gone down considerably since I started her on raw. It's possible for early stage CKD to become diet controlled. There are also lots of low phosphorus options from Weruva. Their website is great because it lists phos content. You should look for foods that are less than 250 mg/100 kcal or less than 1% phosphorus on a dry matter basis.

I suspect the foods your cat is used to are a bit too high in phosphorus. Katherine made some very good suggestions regarding diet.

I'd also like to encourage you to keep getting some spot checks during Merlin's AM and PM cycles. You may be missing some dose reductions.

Thank you Katherine, I'll look into Weruva and Sienne, that's a good idea, I'll check him more often!

Found this when I did a search in the search box

For kitties with kidney disease and diabetes you want to be feeding low phosphorus foods and low carbs

. First number is carb percentage, second is mgs of phosphorus/100 cals, all less than 10% carb and less than 250 mg phos:

Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites can 6% 118
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen La Isla Bonita can 3% 166
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Meowiss Bueller pouch 7% 174
Weruva Truluxe Glam 'N Punk can 0.6% 180
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Fowl Ball can 4% 180
Weruva Classic Pates Jeopurrdy Licious pouch 4% 187
Weruva Classic Pates Family Food pouch 0% 191
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Cattyshack pouch 9% 211
BFF PLAY Tuna & Salmon Shhh... pouch 3% 223
BFF PLAY Tuna & Turkey Totes! pouch 2% 226
BFF PLAY Tuna & Chicken Chill Out pouch 2% 226
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Cat to the Future pouch 8% 235
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates The Breakfast Cat pouch 9.7% 235
Weruva Classic Pates Meal of Fortune pouch 8% 236
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Lamburgini can 8% 236
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Double Dip can 8% 248

You want carbs under 10% and phosphorus ideally low 200's or less.

I suggest you look at Chloe's SS--Alex her CG has a tab at the top of her spreadsheet for Weruva and Soulistic foods organized according to phosphorus and carb levels:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...xl1l7v10-GMbEw_vskUU_gSO-IOo4gjk0CPg5/pubhtmlpubhtml
Go to the top of her spreadsheet and tap on Weruva/Soulistic

Sadly they don't carry Weruva at Petsmart. Only Petco, Chewy or Amazon. I'm able to get lots of varieties of Weruva from my local pet store, and it's cheaper than all of the online options.

Just a little update here. We'll, what do you know, they did a blood-panel and everything came back pretty normal for an 18 year old cat! How about that? Unfortunately he was still not eating much, loosing weight, having diarrhea and getting lethargic so we brought him in again today. The Vet couldn't find anything obvious and for now the consensus is an irritated/inflamed GI tract. He got an anti-nausea shot and some sc fluids and we were sent home with some antibiotics, pro-biotics and an appetite-stimulant. He seems a little better already and should 'turn' the corner in the next two days, otherwise it's back to the clinic .. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Can you post the lab reports?
