Amazing recovery from last night.
It is now straight DARK at 6:30 when I get up for his shot. Not a fan. Does make it easier to go back to sleep. And apparently sleep until +5...

Big props to those who make their own raw food. It was more work than I thought.
Last week I spent nearly 3 hours hand grinding meat for Temp (learning the grinder drips onto the floor halfway thorough :banghead:) and then after I was done packing it up into the little 2 ounce containers, I discovered that a piece of metal shaving had come off the grinder into the food. As I was grinding, I felt it, but I thought it was just a piece of tendon.
All that work, wasted. Carefully weighed out 680 grams of meat, weighed out completer, wasted.
So now I'm going to get a modern meat grinder, screw trying to use my cool vintage grinder.
Any suggestions @PerfumedCatMom @Scdal ?

Here he is with his standard smorgasbord, 3 pre-made raw diet, and 1 just organs. He went down the line and selected just the organs.

Oh my oh my, I am glad you found the metal shaving. Things could have been bad in a very different way. Sorry about all the wasted time and completer and meat. You did the right thing.
Love the picture of Templeton choosing the organ meat!

So sorry about the shaving in the meat. I'm glad you caught it. I hope Templeton keeps sliding down. He's beautiful. The avatar picture doesn't do him justice.

Ugh! Sorry about the bad batch! Don't lose heart though. Learning how to do all of this stuff is a process. I've never ground my own meat as I buy it pre-ground from Raw Feeding Miami. In my Think Tank post, @Daddy Jack's Mommy says she uses a small one from Amazon. Unless you're grinding bone, there's no need for a super high powered expensive one and can get one that's used for sausage making. I've seen some others use a grinder attachment for their Kitchen Aid mixer.

Love that Temp is taking to the raw meats!

Doesn’t anyone cook their meat? Somebody on this board does? Can’t remember who now.
There’s gotta be someone who does. Temp is not a fan of cooked meat. Only thing cooked he will eat is steak. And it has to be freshly cooked. Mayybe he will eat more after a night in the fridge, but that’s about it.

I bought a grinder for around $59 on Amazon two and a half years ago and it works absolutely fine. I don't grind bone so I've never had a problem with this less powerful, less expensive grinder. I've used it regularly to prepare enough raw food for five cats. The biggest pain is having to wash it when I'm done, but using it is very easy. They don't have the same one that I bought, but this one is the same brand and $1 more. There are cheaper brands, for as low as $38 or $39, but I can't vouch for whether they're any good. I know this brand has worked for me. I would never be able to prepare raw food if I was hand grinding meat.
I tried sharing the link here but I couldn't get it to open. The brand is Homdox and the cost is $59.99.Homdox also carries other grinders that are more expensive.

I found it, thank you so much. I needed current real life experience. As informative as Dr, Lisa is, her writing on grinders is nearly 10 years old, and I'm not going to need a bone-capable grinder. And the price is pretty good too!

Ugh! I'm sure you were absolutely disgusted/pissed! All that time and money for nothing! Very thankful you caught it though!

So pissed. It was one of those scenarios where it's like, ok. I'm done, I just can't even right now. You know what I mean?
I've been hand-chunking his food since The One With The Metal Shard. Luckily he likes chunks so it's worked well.

When I ordered my grinder two and a half years ago, I really didn't give it too much thought. I knew I needed a grinder, so I hopped on Amazon and bought one that was reasonably priced. I lucked out with the brand that I bought and I have no regrets. If this one broke tomorrow, I feel like it wouldn't really owe me anything. And I'd hop on and order another one! Good luck, and let us know how it goes if you use one.
