Mikey has been at 1.25 for 8 days now. I like the blue numbers after am and pm shot, but concerned about the jumps yo 300 and 400 . Is that to be expected? I stared him this am on 1.5 dose? Was that wise?
Also, getting blood from ear has been a breeze since I tossed the 33 gauge and got 28 from Walgreens.
I do appreciate the support and suggestion. My vet was amazed at the SS and hold me a was a good daddy lol!

Hi Tom

Glad to hear that testing Mikey has become easier! You may also want to read this post with testing tips written by a senior member:

Yes, it was good you increased to 1.5U. With SLGS you want to evaluate the dose every 7 days.

The higher numbers you are seeing are, what we call bouncing. His body's reaction to lower blood sugar than it is used to.

"Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver"."

Read the senior post and I am doing something right. Mikey does not mind ear massages and since I get blood with the first poke, he sits on my lap fairly content, The Lazy Boy is the test spot and the kitchen counter is the insulin shot as he eats his treat during that.
I think Mikey was a high 200 range when diagnosed so the bounce makes sense. I just hate to see the 300 and 400 range as that was not his pattern that I know of. He is a very laid back, kind cat, do dosing and BG have been more issues for me than my buddy. I am getting better . Thank God

Very happy to hear that. You are doing what you have to to keep Mikey safe and healthy! :)

The bouncing will settle down with time - as his body gets used to lower numbers.
Mikey is settling into a routine. This was his second day on 1.50 and he has bouncing numbers but glad to see those blue ones!
And the best news is that my anxiety is gone and I am settled and I believe Mikey feels it.

He is great about his insulin. He knows the routine and reminds me! Lol
Good boy, Mikey! :-)

Tom is there are reason you test at +5 every day? Do you have flexibiliy in your schedule to get tests at other times? The idea of test in between shots is to identify how low the dose is taking Mikey and to make dose adjustments accordingly. It's possible that he is going lower later in the cycle or earlier. Would it be possible to get tests at different times during the day? That, is get a test at +4 one day and +6 another etc?

Sure, I can get tests other times. At night, I generally do +5 because I go to bed after that. I could do an earlier test. Daytime would be more flexible, later or earlier would work. I was picking the + 5 time because I was under the impression that was generally the lowest point. I don’t like those higher numbers

The lowest point - what we call the nadir - is usually between +4 and +6 with Lantus. But it can and does move around. It would be good to get more tests in the day if you can? Say +4 and +6 one day, +5 and +7 on another etc etc.

That would mean pricking him at AMP + 4+ 6 PMPS +4+6 - six pricks a day? Is that what you are saying? How often? Isn’t that a bit overkill to do daily?I would literally be stuck in the house? Please explain?

Yes, 6 pricks a day - on days you are at home. It need not be the exact times I said. Those were just examples.
If you can manage only 1 per cycle, please get tests at different times each day rather than only at +5?
