Oscar cat was diagnosed yesterday with diabetes. He is on the lantus pen 1 unit to start. The vet is pushing my mom to buy the pet monitor for testing. The strips are expensive, she has a human monitor of her own.
verio reflectone touch monitor. Can she use this to test him? Is it accurate or off a few number?
I should also so that. My parents don’t have access to the internet.

Yes, she can use a human meter to test him. Is he on a low carb diet or switching one? You may want to see how he does with a diet change before starting on Lantus - IF he does not have ketones. If he has ketones, you start the insulin right away.

Most of the members use humanm for testing. We were using these long before someone got the idea to brand meters as "pet meters" and jack up the price.

I have the AlphaTrak 2 system but it's become very expensive now. I've just had to buy another pack of 50 test strips at £52.49 which is the best price I can find.

So I've taken a punt and bought a human kit which is considerably cheaper. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07PFJ5N85/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20) That's the entire kit. Bought it just now so should arrive in the next couple of days. The test strips and lancets are much cheaper also.

I'm going to test Herbie (my diabetic cat) with the AlphaTrak2 when the strips come and also with this new kit to compare the readings. If they're the same then I shall stick with this cheaper one.

I will update with the results.

Now I just need to find a replacement for the Prozin syringes which cost £25 a month.

Also, check for a free local needle pickup. My vet charges £16 to take the medical sharps waste box but my council have a free needle pick up service and I leave the full box on my doorstep and they just leave a new empty one. On my council page it's listed as Clinical waste, perhaps your local council has a similar service.

Thanks
Elly

No ketones he had blood work done yesterday. The vet told mom not to use a human monitor. I also told her that I use a human one to test Molly.

Grreat. Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. Just be their vet for them :banghead:

Will the numbers be off a bit or accurate?

The numbers are accurate. The pet version is calibrated to more closely match the one the vet uses and will read higher. But it also costs ~10x for the strips. And you know how many strips can be run through. Especially when starting out/learning and not getting a big enough sample, or not holding it on the ear correctly...

They will be slightly different, but both are accurate. We can help you learn the scale used for each type of meter. Human meters are more economical to use and the strips can be found at most pharmacies where test strips for pet meters must be purchased online. If you need strips in an emergency, it is better to have them readily available.
