I have read the same info as Katherine. I tried it in one of my cats for itching (not congestion). It didn’t work for the itching, but I hope it works for congestion. It made him a bit sleepy as I recall.

I found this on the CRF site, where they discuss using Zyrtec for appetite stimulation, but I would start at the smallest dose recommended of 1.25 mg (⅛ of a 10 mg tab or ¼ of a 5 mg tab) and increase up to 2.5 mg if that doesn't work. I found this other site that says 2.5 - 5 mg. Hope Dolly's congestion improves today!
Thanks Katherine. I don’t know if you remember but last year, my failure to double check which Zyrtec the pharmacy gave me put Dolly in the hospital on fluids, testing etc. It took me hours after staying up with her all night knowing something was off with her, to finally check the box and see that it was the Zyrtec you NEVER give to cats. I could have lost her. I was so clear with the pharmacist what I wanted and why that I never doubted what they gave me. It scares me that the part of me that I depend on, detail oriented, I was head of Quality for a pharmaceutical printer for 25 years, has been drifting away. It’s taken me 10 months to even consider giving it a try. I’ve given her Cyproheptadine, a prescription antihistamine and appetite stimulant ( Dolly does not need to eat more) and so many many different meds for her sinusitis over the years. Wouldn’t it be a miracle if there is a med that could help her feel better :woot::woot:.

I apologize for always being so long winded, the Zyrtec was so traumatizing for all of us. I know you are working from home but still working. No need to respond, thank you for being there. Enjoy whatever time you have with the girls today. Hugs and talk soon.

Ginger is posing in her sleep with two products that I have used to ease cat congestion. One is the Little Remedies Decongestant Nose Drops. The other is simply Ayr Saline Nasal Drops. The decongestant needs to be used sparingly because, just like people who are using decongestant nose drops it can rebound on you and make it worse. Only use for a day or two at a time. The saline can help as well and is harmless to use daily. Have you ever tried these?

You can read up on using the decongestant online to be sure. I was told to get only the phenylephrine HCl.
What kind of Zyrtec is bad for cats? Did it have another ingredient in there besides the Cetirizine HCl?

Thanks Suzanne. I’ve tried nose drops. She loves me to tap her nose when getting ear and neck rubs. She does not like any meds, pills in particular or nasal spray or drops, forget it. She is strong and does not like anything other than my fingertip near her face. I haven’t tried little remedies, I have infant saline spray and Ayr. I so appreciate the help but just testing her now is a challenge. :stop::facepalm::mad: Thank you so much. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

You know. I understand. And you need to not break that trust with Dolly? How will you pill her with Zyrtec? Won’t she fight it?

I don’t remember but is usually mentioned when information is shared about using Zyrtec with cats. :bookworm: Before I buy any Zyrtec I will be diligent in reading about it. :bookworm:

I need dosing help. Dolly’s numbers are so inconsistent compared to 3 weeks ago. Is this just about me wanting to see more green or does she really need an increase. I know it would mean I have to stay up later but I’m already up late because I don’t know she won’t drop 95 points again. She never was a bouncer like she is now. I need help getting perspective of her overall results at her current dose. She just seemed more playful and a happier cat when in the 60’s and 70’s. Help please, again

The one that is bad for cats is Zyrtec “D”
Hope you had a nice day Suzanne. Thanks for being around and giving so much of you to help us. I know how much I appreciate it :joyful::bighug::joyful:

Afternoon Adrienne, I hope the Zyrtec helps if you decide to try it.
If you go up to the search box up top and type in Zyrtec you will find a lot of posts about using ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:
A belated thank you Diane for your caring and thoughtfulness. I hope you’ve had a good day. Hope Ashley is doing well. Hope Tyler is missing my kisses :kiss: and stops waking up his mom :p See you later Diane :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I don't remember this but I do know that it's very easy to make the mistake. I'm glad you're being more careful about it now. There's also a kind of Pepcid that you can't give to kitties and I had to look it up while standing in the pharmacy to make sure I got the right one.

Maybe I didn’t share it, it was a scare I never want to revisit and not my proudest moment, how much danger I seriously put Dolly’s life in.

It’s difficult to know what changed. It can be something as seemingly crazy as barometric pressure but it can change the BG. We always want to know what changed but sometimes we just don’t and I honestly can’t tell you what might have changed.

She does have some lower nadirs but if you are good with staying up a bit, I’d increase the dose to 1.5u and see if we can give her a little kickstart.

Thanks Marje. I want to do what’s best for Dolly and really don’t know if she’s fine where she is or if an increase will make her feel better. Hope you are doing well. Thank you for responding. :bighug::bighug:

You’re welcome. I saw that you just fattened the dose and, typically, unless a cat is seeing mostly green and just a little blue so that a bit of fine-tuning is needed, it’s much better to increase and decrease by 0.25u.

I agree Marje. I was conflicted about doing anything today because Dolly must have heard you mention increase :woot:and had her lowest AMPS in weeks this morning. Her numbers so far today look more like the Dolly I’m used to. Just 5 hours of sleep last night and not much more most nights has hit me hard today. I know my head is not on straight and I’m trying to get a nap ( not easy for me) so I can see things a little clearer. Thank you for following up and reminding me about fat dosing.

The old dose increase threat that worked!

It was just a tease, increased to 1.5 tonight. I hope this gets her back to more stable numbers and those strange bounces I'm not used to, disappear. Have a nice evening Marje and thank you for checking in with us. :bighug:
