? 8/23 Max AMPS 360 +2 306 +4 323 +6 385 +9 526 PMPS 507 What is this itchy brown gunk in Max's ears?

What is this brownish stuff in Max’s ears? I noticed he is scratching his ears a lot today. I looked and there’s a lot of brown gunk in both ears. What could that be? Gosh I hate to take him to the vet AGAIN. @Wendy&Neko @Marje and Gracie

Any chance you could take a picture of the ears and post it? I don't have familiarity with ear issues.

Not sure what happened with the +9. He has not had anything this pm except boiled chicken
Cats numbers wobble around during a bounce. I wouldn't bother trying to explain every high test number.

I got some of it out along the edges with the q-tip. Can’t see it well in the picture but it’s a lot there.

That’s gonna need drops like Tresaderm most likely. Could be yeast. Could be bacterial. Only way to tell is to get the vet to swab it and look under microscope. Sorry to say that Tresaderm and most ear drops have a steroid component in them to help with inflammation. I have tried some of the natural enzymatic drops before and never had any luck in curing the infections.

Oh and it takes a good long time to get rid of ear infections. Always use the drops for the recommended amount of time and, even then, sometimes they come back and you have to do it again. :banghead: Ear infections can really raise BG though. I have a friend whose cat is diabetic and has ear problems. Her BG is always up when she has ear flare ups!

Sometimes cats get a build up of ear wax. It could also be an infection. If you have any ear cleaner you could try cleaning his ears. If you want to try and treat for an infection this is the only thing I've found that is steroid free: https://www.1800petmeds.com/Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution Hydrocortisone Free-prod338153.html

You could try this before going to the vet. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
You could try it first. That the stuff I tried too, but every cat is different so who knows. In my cats, the ear wax is not black but a lighter color…. more brown. The black usually means yeast or bacteria but again ECID.

Oh be careful when cleaning his ears. Only clean what you can see and don’t dig deeply - that can cause problems for cats. Even if the vets get too aggressive with ear cleaning it can cause problems. Sorry you probably already knew this. I just mentioned it because I have a friend whose cat got Horner’s Syndrome from ear cleaning at the vet.
