I used to get bumped a lot cheaper from a compounding pharmacy. Another thing I liked getting it from the pharmacy was I got a bottle instead of individual syringes so it lasted longer.

Oh I'm so glad to hear Max responds to the Bupe! I remember he didn't do too well on the really high injected doses, so am glad you've found out the oral is good for him! I don't know of a vet in my area who will give me more than the individual syringes from them. They don't want kitty stayign on the Bupe (or people using the Bupe for themselves lol!). I get it, but you are right those individual syringes are not cheap! I do keep Pearl on the Bupe for as long as she needs it when there are Pancreatitis episodes. It could be a week or more at a time.

He was so drowsy on the Gabapentin, so I decided to try the oral Bupe again and he was a different kitty, so playful. I would bet my vet wouldn't let me get it anywhere else either. We have a wonderful compounding pharmacy here where I live. That would be nice if the vet would give me an RX. I will have to check on that. @Margaret (and Pearl)

I also got mine at a compounding pharmacy but it does take a prescription from the vet. It’s not cheap to have it compounded either but I found it’s much easier to give because they can flavor it. It can have a bitter taste to some cats. If you have it compounded, be absolutely sure that if they flavor it, they do. It add any sweeteners including artificial ones like maltodextrin because they normally will do that with compounded vet meds.

If you don’t have a good compounding pharmacy there, Wedgwood is a great compounding pharmacy from which to order.

BTW, I had a very old, arthritic kitty and the only thing that kept him feeling good from the pain was a very low dose of compounded bupe twice a day. While it can cause constipation in some cats, it never did with him and he took it for a couple years.

Neko loved her chicken flavoured compounded buprenorphine. That is, the chicken soup flavour, not the roasted chicken one. Cats! :cat: I got a vial from my local compounding pharmacy and much cheaper than from the vet, about $100 for 3 months worth. The vet needed a special prescription pad to order it as it's a controlled substance. Neko was on it for a couple years because of her acro arthritis, and it was a game changer in how much better she felt.

I was wondering about how often I should be feeding Max? He stays hungry all the time and I try to limit how much he eats but he does eat a lot of small meals throughout the day like boiled chicken, fancy feast, tiki cat tuna ( all low carb). I just give him small amounts like every 3 hours. He is getting so big though. He’s 19 pounds. I’m not sure what I should be doing. Any advise on how much to feed him? @Wendy&Neko
I weighed Neko regularly, and fed her according to what weight the vet and I thought was a good weight for her. I also fed raw food, which I found seemed to be more filling than canned food which has more fillers in it. You might want to discuss with your vet whether Max needs to lose weight or not. The acro tumour puts out excess growth hormone, and that can mean muscle as well as bony/soft tissue growth. Think teenage boys. Weight gain may be appropriate if he's getting longer/taller.

The other tool that really helped me was the autofeeder. Once Neko learned the autofeeder fed her meals after PS, she no longer bugged me for food. :) One more thing that will really help you is getting Max into better blood sugar numbers. Nice to see yellows a couple days in a row now.

Does anyone know if I can buy buprenorphine for Max anywhere besides the vet? It costs a fortune, especially with everything else for him lately. It seems to help him, he acts more comfortable when I give it to him. Yesterday he felt good all day. Just always hungry! Does anyone use CBD oil for their cat? @Wendy&Neko @Marje and Gracie Yesterday https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/thr...-366-5-265-7-267-9-267-pmps-320-2-344.251746/

Okay thanks @Wendy&Neko I'm getting interested in learning how to make cat food anyway. I saw that EZ Premix from Fur For Life website and ordered a sample with the instructions. His vet said he only needs to eat meals before his insulin twice a day. That ain't happening for Max! He has always been a big cat (he was 13 pounds when we adopted him at about 1 year old) and he's really big now. I have an autofeeder that I can use. Max does have arthritis. I can see it when he walks. He cannot jump on anything and loves to sleep on our bed. He has some steps to walk up to get on our bed now. The buprenorphine has worked wonders for him so far but the vet charges $10 per dose and only gives me four doses at the time. The Gabapentin worked but it makes him so sleepy. I plan to ask the vet how I can get the buprenorphine any cheaper.

You welcome!! :bighug::bighug: Our vet was very much on aboard and helped me transition Amethyst OFF the Gaba and onto the CBD I am soo pleased with how much better Amethyst is and also JoJo is not as anxious as before:cat::cat:
Max is an anxious cat too and has arthritis. I have read good things about CBD oil for cats, so I'm interested in trying it. Thanks for letting me know where to order.

That's old fashioned thinking for old fashioned in and out insulins that hit hard early in the cycle. Not true for the depot insulins. Most people here feed their cats multiple small meals. Ideally not so many carbs after nadir, when the insulin effect is slowing down on it's own. Adding carbs in that situation shortens duration and gives you higher preshots.

Yes that’s basically what I’ve been doing anyway. I was just wondering if I was right in doing so. He would eat all the time if I’d let him. I guess he bounced this afternoon at the preshot, because he didn’t eat anything between those last two BG checks.
