8/12 Callie AMPS 174, +2 91, 4 131, +6 118, PMPS 183, +2 243

Yes, just a really thin layer on the outside of the ear where you test. I also move around the testing site a tad. Sometimes it is near the top of her ear and sometimes it is midway. Always, on the outside. I have found that I have to try and test in different sites if I don't get any blood and that is why I will move it around a bit on just the outside of the ear tip.
Great, thanks for the tips. We'll give it a try.

It's unlikely that there could be that much of a difference. I'm going to bed now, so I'm tagging @PerfumedCatMom to help you with this.
Sorry but I’m not going to be of much help. I’m terrible at math and have never wrapped my brain around those calculations. Are there other rabbit formulas on the Dr Pierson list that you can get that Callie will eat? Lots of people with cats with sensitive tummies also mix a small bit of honey with low carb food for MC.

I do have one more question about calculating carbs -- from Dr. Pierson's food chart, it looks like the Instinct Limited Ingredient Rabbit wet pate has 13% carbs (that's what we've used as "MC") But I just found this and completelyconfused myself: https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/calculating-calories-from-carbohydrates.205128/ When I do the calculation of % calories from carbs, it is much higher than 13% (like 35+%). I should go by the 13% for purposes of considering it MC, correct?
Hi - I can help with the math. Did you obtain the as fed or dry matter basis values for the flavor from Instinct? If so, can you share those values (I don't see them posted on Instinct's website - which is pretty normal as most pet food companies don't post it though some do like Weruva and Wellness - but I also could have missed them!).

If you don't have the values, you can contact the company and asked for the metabolized energy values (ME values are the % of calories coming from protein, fat, and carbs - for your kitty, you would just need the carb value but get all three as they should equal 100%). If the company won't share the ME values, then ask for the As Fed and/or DMB values - if you get these values, you would then plug them into the forumla explained in the post you linked (feel free to DM me if you need help!).

If I had to guess, I think you may have plugged in the Guaranteed Analysis numbers into the formula - but those numbers are not the correct inputs (you must use either as fed or dry matter values). Additionally, the GA values only tell you the min or max value - meaning for ones listed as minimum, the amount could be higher and the ones listed as maximum, the amount could be lower. This is covered in that link you posted and there's link in there to an excellent article on GA values (and why they aren't awesome for those analyzing nutrition).

In summary, this is why Dr. Lisa's list is so awesome...although getting dated...it's so much work to get the values that caregivers really need!

Hope that helps a little bit :bighug:

Thanks everyone for info about food! I will respond to you all once we figure out the night dose of insulin. Also, testing was much easier - will share later about that too but huge thanks to everyone who had suggestions earlier!

Just got PMPS of 183 so basically the same as the AMPS but Callie has tended to go lower at night of late. We have testing supplies and MC/ HC food/ honey. Testing at night is a little trickier than during the day though -- I can stay up all night if I have to but my partner takes meds that make him somewhat groggy in the evening so it is harder for him to stay up / get up to help and so far, we've only done it with two of us. Do you think it is safe to give the full 2U if we can definitely get a +1, +2, +3, +4 and maybe even a +5 before he has to go to sleep? Thanks for any advice!

Bumping. Our usual shot time was about 25 mins ago but we were a few mins late this am as well so I don't think that is that big a deal. But I do think I messed up one thing -- we let Callie eat after we tested so if we test again now, her numbers will likely be influenced by food. It is her reg low carb but still...

Hi Jessica, You shot 170 this morning, and yes, Callie dropped, but 184 is well within a safe zone. I wouldn't stall anymore and give her insulin now.

Please take the 911 off as that is reserved for medical emergencies.

Will do, thank you. Sorry about the 911 - thought that was what I was supposed to put when stalling. Thx for the clarification.

How's Callie doing with the testing? I see you gave her a little break this afternoon. I'd get a +11 test until you get more comfy with shooting blue numbers. Then you can get more eyes on your condo, get some advice, and you won't be panicked into stalling.

I'm here for you though, at least until 10:30 PM.

The combo of a larger gauge lancet and Vaseline worked like a charm at PMPS! Hopefully, our luck will continue... Thanks again for that tip!

Terrific, thank you. Sounds good. Testing was a lot better with the larger gauge lancet and Vaseline. Hoping that continues... We are planning to skip the +1 -- unless you think it is important to get it -- but will get the +2 in about an hour and 15 mins.

That helps a lot, thank you so much Susanne! Yup, I was plugging in the GA numbers - I actually thought that GA and as fed were the same. Looks like I have a lot more reading and learning to do!! Thx again :bighug:

Probably a bounce from the 69 this morning. Test again if you can, but she will likely be heading up. Have a good night, Jessica! Hope tomorrow is not as eventful. :)

Lol these sugar kitties definitely keep us on our toes ... Sounds good, thanks Katherine. Hope you have a good night too :)
