A crazy AMPS for Dolly but then yesterday her numbers were all strange (to me). I am beyond exhausted and not thinking very straight. Last night when her numbers were low she was almost the old loving, playful Dolly. We had a beautiful bonding time at 1:00am. She is so often angry at me about testing and in her Dolly way will walk past me making these sounds like muttering under her breath .

Dolly has an appointment with a Neurologist on Thursday. Hoping to get some answers on her problems with walking, her neck and paw twitch, her zoning out.

I am going to be switching from my ReliOn syringes to BD insulin syringes, u100, 3/10mL, 8mm, (same as ReliOn). I measured several syringes with my calipers and I get the same “1.65mm for 1.25 units” as I did on the ReliOn syringes. Am I measuring correctly?

I'm so glad you had that bonding time with your girl. It seems she must have periodic pain that makes her personality different from other times and this is why her BG goes up. I'm using the BD syringes; when I measured I came up with 1.4 mm for 1.0 U (so 1.75 mm for 1.25 U). But that's a pretty small difference from your measurement. So I suspect you're fine.

Probably. The BD definitely have a bigger hub. I started out with CarePoint. When I switched to BD (because I ran out and could get BD's quick thru Amazon) we went into the limes right away. Now I switched back to Carepoint and have had a heck of a time trying to figure out the right dose and now that he's been messed up I'm having a hard time getting him back down. This time I bought 2 boxes of Carepoints. I will not let that happen again. I guess if I had calipers it wouldn't matter so much.

Thanks for responding Heather. I bought the BD syringes because Walmart was out of the ReliOn the last two times I went there. In my mind, how could they possibly be out of ReliOn insulin syringes? Then again, they are always out of cat food, as is every other store, and a lot of things I normally get there. Good luck with getting his numbers regulated.

Thanks Carla, it’s been awhile. I know I have to accept her as she is, she’s a cat after all . Still, I miss the Dolly that wasn’t mad at me and that would coming running or already waiting for us by the door when we’ve been out. She’s getting older and those little legs are not what they used to be when she was a young lady .I love her with all of my heart no matter what.

Hi Elise, new pen, last one from Marks Marine from last October. Looks fine I have 4 more new pens purchased from the supply closet a month ago. Based on timing??? Anything I should be worried about? Do I need to test anymore tonight, give us both a break? Thanks Elise.

Dolly, you look a lot better in greens than blues. Glad she's checking off some of those Ps. I used 1.62 mm as one unit on BD syringes for the calipers as per Marje's calipers post, so for me, 1.25 units would be 2.025 mm (or just 2 for simplicity's sake) on the calipers.

Yes, the BDs I used were the Ultrafine II. As long as you know what 1 unit is for YOUR syringe and you keep it consistent, that's all that matters. It could be that the BDs hold a little less than the Relions, but I don't know as I've never used them. Just a quick note before I attempt to go back to sleep. Both ReliOn and my new BD syringes also get that large air bubble at the top I knee jerked reacted to Dolly’s 181 at AMPS this morning and put Dolly back at 1.5 units. This could be the completely wrong action to take, I never should make changes when I am sleep deprived and I went ahead anyway Thanks Katherine.

With that 50 you got 2 days ago she might dip low today with the increase, but trust me, I understand the impulse to bump up the insulin seeing higher numbers. I know you will keep a good eye on her though.

Thanks Sue. I definitely regret my decision and will put her right back down to 1.25units tonight. I continue to learn the hard way and hate that in this situation my precious Dolly is the recipient of my poor decisions. I know to base a dosage on their nadir and not pre shot but all I saw were high numbers, until now.

This was written about a year ago to a couple of other members who were concerned/questioned the BG numbers of their kitties and all the ups and downs we see:

I wish I could draw a picture of that little pancreas...it's got a little tired face today on your kitties @@Butters & Lyla and @@Lisa & Oberon - that little guy is just pooped out...and has it's little tiny feet up on the sofa...just kinda taking a little nap...only problem is it's so tired and worn out, it's having trouble waking up from that nap...

So while that little guy is resting, help him out and gently, slowly and carefully, increase the dose of 'helper juice' aka insulin - that you're giving. The thing with these little pancreas fellows, is the darn thing wakes up from it's nap and gets all energized and says, 'Hey I can help!'...and starts making insulin and making a contribution...and that's when you've got to back off from the help aka insulin you're giving...and let the little fellow help out...but then he'll get tired again...and well 'sigh'...just gotta sit down and maybe even put it's tiny feet up again and take another snooze...how long will he rest for this time? No one really knows...but when you're helping with the insulin you give and get those greens, it's really hard to tell if he's actually allowing a little bit of homegrown insulin go...or if he's holding onto it tightly while he's resting - but the green numbers are healing numbers...so either way, that pancreas is happy when those numbers are down - less demand - so he's not running so fast on his tiny little 'gerbil wheel' trying to crank out the insulin...

And then let's not even get started on what Mr. Liver thinks of all this activity...because he's the guy in charge of STORAGE! He's constantly storing a supply of gylcogen (sugar basically) JUST IN CASE! He's a real life-saver when it comes down to it...because when that blood sugar goes too low (from your contribution and little pancreas fellow working a little too much)...then he comes to the 'rescue' and dumps a nice big load of sugar into that bloodstream...because he doesn't want anything bad to happen to those organs - like the brain and heart and other important organs that need that 'food'...sugar is a form of energy to the body...and that makes everyone happy except for you...and well, the liver gets a little over-enthusiastic sometimes and dumps all it's got reserved and then there's too much sugar in the blood stream and that's not really a very good thing either - all that sugar coursing through the veins isn't very healthy...kinda hard on those kidneys to deal with all that sugar then...

And so it goes...it's a real merry go round in there with all these players...so just test, test, test...and count based on your dosing method - since those are tried and true and will help you with the pace of a healthy progress back towards a regulated orchestra in there...

And for now...I'm pooped just writing about it...

If you look at Dolly’s SS would you be suspicious of the new pen? I know she had those low numbers on 08/06 but doesn’t the depot come into play for that day? Sorry, but I read and read some more but my ability to retain information has seriously declined.
