Hi guys. A bit confused with what to do. Just got home and took his PMPS and got 115. I read that we should stall and not feed and try again in 20 min. Problem is, the only way we can get BG is with a treat so he has eaten a treat tube. What do we do now? So lost with to feed? to shoot? to wait???

he is hungry as it’s been 6 hours since he last ate (at +6) and the snack tube isn’t going to satisfy him for long.

Go ahead and test...it takes about 20-30 minutes for food to break down and get into his bloodstream so it's not the end of the world. It's just important that we know about it.

Thanks for replying. Test again right now or 20 min? also major screw up on my part! I thought it was PMPS time but it’s been a super long day and I’m frazzled, so we did BG at +11 and he’s not even supposed to get his shot now for another half hour. I cab not believe I misread the time! Do I do another test now

You might try something different for "testing treats" ....something like PureBites freeze dried treats (they have lots of protein choices) or even just a little baked chicken......something that's nothing but pure protein shouldn't effect her numbers much.

With your trouble with testing, has anybody suggested trying the Libre? It's not perfect by any means, but if he'll tolerate it, all you'd have to do is scan with your phone or a special reader.

Let's see where he is at shot time. Do what you have to do to test....just always make sure when you post, you inform us of what/when he ate if it happened close to shot times

Here's something I wrote up for others for testing...maybe it'll help you too!

It can be really helpful to establish a routine with testing. Pick one spot that you want your "testing spot" to be (I like the kitchen counter because it's got good light and it's at a good height....it also already blocked 2 escape routes due to the wall and the backsplash) It can be anywhere though...a rug on the floor, a table, a particular spot on the couch...wherever is good for you.

Take him there as many times a day as you can and just give his ears a quick rub and then he gets a yummy (low carb) treat. Most cats aren't objecting so much with the poking..it's the fooling with their ears they don't like, but once they're desensitized to it and learn to associate a certain place with the treats, they usually start to come when they're called! Or even when they hear us opening the test kit!

You also have to remember...you're not poking him to hurt him...you're testing him to keep him safe and understand what's going on inside his body. There's just nothing better than truly understanding what's going on inside your kitty's body and with this disease, the more knowledge you have, the more power you have against it. The edges of the ears have very few pain receptors, so it really doesn't hurt them. Also, if you're nervous and tense, it's going to make your kitty nervous and tense too. As silly as it might seem, try singing! It forces you to use a different part of your brain!

It's also important to make sure his ear is warm. A small sock filled with a little rice and microwaved or a small pill bottle filled with warm water (check temp against your wrist like you would a baby bottle) works well

For new kitties, using a heavier gauge lancet is also really helpful. A 25-28 gauge lancet pokes a bigger "hole" than a 31-33 gauge lancet does, so look for "Alternate Site testing" lancets that are usually a lower number

Finding the right "treat" will be a great help too! Freeze dried chicken, bonito flakes, little pieces of baked chicken...whatever low carb treat you can find that he really enjoys will help him to associate the testing with the treat! China's Achilles heel was baked chicken, so I'd bake a piece, chop it into bite sized pieces, put some in the refrigerator and freeze the rest to use as needed. It didn't take long for her to come any time I picked up the meter!

just finished actual PMPS and it’s 169 now. Is that still too low to feed and give insulin? It went from 115 to 169 in the past hour but he did have a snack tube. I just don’t know what the numbers are that are ok to go ahead or too low just wait.

My biggest concerns is your lack of testing. Most of the time I'd tell somebody to go ahead and shoot the scheduled dose IF they had plenty of supplies and were able to test as much and as often as necessary, but we can't say that about you and Juggie.

I'd just skip tonight....maybe if you can get a test in later in the evening it would be great to just add to the data.

You'd put N.S. in the U column for "no shot"

so skip tonight’s insulin, feed him now and try for another bg reading before bed?

We really are trying to test more but this has been a literal bloody struggle (I’ve got the scar to prove it lol) I’m also the only one who can test ( I work full time so can only do it after 5pm, plus I need someone else to hold him to do it. We gave up on ears as we got zero success and lots of pain and now do his paw.
