07/23 KittyLou AMPS 532,+2 441,+4 458,+6 480 PMPS 743

I hope this isn’t a duplicate. My cats numbers are sky high after a food change. Raise or lower insulin?

Can you get some tests on the PM cycle? A lot of cats go lower at night. You don't have to stay up all night testing but if you could get a +2 and a "before bed" test it might help.

If you only test on the AM cycle, you're only getting half the data.

I’ll work on that testing tonight.
She “free feeds” the dry food. I was able to split her ration and give her half around 8 am, and the other half around 8 pm but she still grazes all day and night. I’m not sure how that affects the numbers.

Good job on the new thread, Nancy :bighug::bighug::bighug: Here's your old one for continuity - https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/kittylou-and-basaglar.250229/

And like Chris said, getting a +2/+3 is always a good idea, even on SLGS - generally speaking (ECID and you'll learn how your cat reacts to lantus):

  • If the +2 is about the same as the Pre-shot, usually they're going to have a fairly "normal" cycle...slowly dropping to nadir and then slowly heading back up until the next PS
  • If it's higher than the PS, that can indicate the beginning of a bounce and those are the cycles where you can usually get by without testing as much
  • If the +2 is lower than the PS, that's your "early warning"....those are the cycles where it's important to try to get more tests in...but if you can't, you might want to leave some higher carb food down for kitty
I posted the info you formatted. I thought I lost the first try. I hope I didn’t duplicate the post. I dread testing, only because it depresses me to get high numbers.
Good job :bighug::bighug::bighug: And I think you did duplicate, but don't worry about it - sometimes the board can be wonky. I think if no one commented on the other *new* post then you can delete it (I've never done this...but really don't fret over it). I hear ya on the high numbers...I'm sure they will improve...feline diabetes is one big lesson in patience. And those extra tests at night will help us see if the high numbers during the day are from (1) bouncing or (2) not enough insulin. Every test is just data gathering. Lou knows you love her :bighug::bighug::bighug:

You need night tests. Looks like she’s coming down some today. I would hold this dose and get a test later in the cycle tonight. Are you going to follow TR or SLGS. @Chris & China (GA) What do you think?

I know the Dr. Elsey's is one of the "low carb" kibble's but we've heard where some cats react to it like it was high carb. Can you try getting the dry completely out of the picture?

If she's a "grazer", you can add water to the canned food to help to keep it from drying out, use an auto-feeder to open and offer her a fresh meal whenever you decide to program it or you can make "food-cycles" by adding water to canned and freezing it in ice cube trays. Most cats won't eat it frozen, but in a few hours after it's thawed, it could be a "fresh meal".

@Nancy S I merged your duplicate condo and partially updated your thread title but if your question was answered, please remove the “?”. Thanks very much.

With the 2 threads, I wasn't sure what you were asking but I agree with you. Right now I don't see anything screaming at me that she's getting too much.

I have tried so many times to switch her from dry. I know its healthier. I have always had a cabinet full of wet for my other cat. I will keep trying. I just tested her tonight and she was 743. I really am in panic mode. Maybe its the Dr. Elseys food. I will remove that and give her DM and some FF Pate.
I dont know if its a coincidence or not but her numbers didn't go crazy until she started the Doctor Elseys food on July 14.
Are there any message boards on here for super high BG values? My vet isnt even open on weekends. Is there any hope for a cat on dry food?

Nancy

We do not have a board for super high numbers when the dose is low. If the dose gets very high and KittyLou is diagnosed with a high dose condition, then we have a forum for those kitties. But she’s no where near that.

Here are some of the reasons her BGs might be high:
  • The dose is too low. I’m not sure why you lowered the dose from 2u but I wouldn’t have.
  • You aren’t getting any nighttime tests. Cats typically go lower at night and that can trigger a bounce up into much higher numbers. If you can get a +2 and before bed tests, that would go a long way to determining if she needs more insulin.
  • If you are feeding even LC food between nadir and the next PS, it could be affecting her duration
  • The dry food
Here is some info on transitioning off dry food. It is from a site regarding raw feeding but the part about getting them off dry food is helpful. And yes, we’ve had some cats do well even eating dry but wet food is so much better for her health.

Chris and I have both responded to your request for a SS Review so please take down the “?” And “SS Review Please” and update the subject line with her PMPS. Thank you!
