? 7/20 Chloe - AMPS 80 | PMPS 103 - Vet Update and 2 questions about Clavamox, CKD diet

Vet visit went without a hitch from Chloe today, so hurrah for that!

Diagnosis was a UTI so we have some Clavamox for 10 days.

Question 1
Is that okay to give around the same time as insulin? Shot is in about 1.5 hours.

Vet was concerned that the urinalysis didn't show ANY glucose spillover. I'm think that just means the insulin is working? She also wanted to keep Chloe's sugars in the 100-200 range rather than where she is. Also some concern about using a human meter over a pet one. Probably seen too many hypo events... but I'm gonna stick with what's working for us. She wanted to try going down to 1U as well. I'm gonna do a few more cycles at 1.25 before I test out dropping the dose, especially since we skipped on Friday. But if a UTI could be pushing her numbers higher in general, then yeah, she might be due for another reducie!

Not all of the labs run seem to have uploaded to our portal, so my spreadsheet doesn't give the full picture. But she did point out the BUN and Creatinine levels, which were pretty on point with her last set of labs, so... keeping our eye out for CKD. I asked vet about preventative measures and she said diet and then recommended the 3 "prescription" foods so...

Question 2
Recommendations for foods that are diabetic and CKD friendly? Or at least in terms of helping to prevent it from getting worse as long as possible?

I've no experience with CKD, but lots of people here have. Hopefully they stop by. In the meantime, most of them use this site:

From what I understand, you want low phosphorus food (on top of low carb of course). And if that's not doable, add in a phos binder.

As for the clavamox, i don't see why you couldn't give it at shot time. Will she do a culture? From what I understand clavamox isn't the best for UTIs....I've seen a few other suggestions here, primarily veraflox. But usually dependent on what the culture shows.

Sorry about the possible UTI. :( I don't know much about UTIs and antibiotics, but I know a thing or two about diet controlled CKD. I wrote a whole thing about raw feeding for senior kitties on the Think Tank forum, but in case raw is not an option, below are some Weruva foods are low carb (<10%)/low phos (<250mg/100 cals). FWIW, I had Ruby on Weruva before I switched to raw, and raw was much better at lowering all of her kidney values, plus she loves it! :cat:

I was given the choice of Clavamox or Convenia, and she had a bad reaction the last time she got a Convenia shot.

We don’t have any follow ups scheduled, so I don’t think they plan to do a culture.

Thanks for the food suggestions! I’ve been meaning to look at Weruva.

I still use Weruva foods for MC and HC even though I feed raw the rest of the time because Weruva is good about posting their carb and phos percentages on their website so I know what I'm feeding Ruby. The pouched Cats in the Kitchen foods are super tasty according to my kitties and a little spoonful goes a long way.
