Chloe has had the freestyle Libre for 7 days now. Her numbers are not even close to regulated. My vet pulled her off all insulin and now wants to start back on a 1 unit dose twice a day for the next 5 days. That is what we have been on for the last month that WASNT WORKING!!! I got up to 3 units per dose without her guidance and still nothing from this insulin. Vet said 3 units twice a day was way to much for a 6 pound cat. I want her to change to lantus but she doesn’t want to do anything until she has 5 days of numbers on the 1 unit twice a day.

On that dose, Chloe stays super sick. I wish I could attach her graphs from the Libre here but it won’t let me add a picture. Basically she drops into the high 200 to mid 300’s until she eats. When she eats, even with insulin, she immediately jumps into the 500s and stays there till around +6 hours or so. At that time she slowly starts dropping back down to the 300-400 range. Then I feed her again, give her next dose of insulin, and she shoots right back up.

chloe has special circumstances and has to eat feline id food for Epi, so we are fighting a crazy battle here. I just can’t understand why her vet won’t switch the insulin! I’m telling her the cat is vomiting and drinking a ton and super super sick and she’s not listening!!!

I’m beyond frustrated!

I’m going to give her 2.5 units tonight. I can’t watch her suffer. Time for a second opinion as well I believe.

Agreed. Your vet works for you. If they’re not doing the job you need them to, release them.

May also be helpful to share this research from the AAHA with them about cat-appropriate insulins:

Thank you. I don’t understand why she would want to take the cat back to 1 unit twice a day when that was the whole reason we went back to her and had the Libre put on in the first place. One unit wasn’t enough at night and she was drinking too much, vomiting, you name it. I’m just beside myself. Why wouldn’t she go ahead and use another insulin!?
