I do not currently have ketone strips, am planning to get some tomorrow. He started insulin the evening of June 30 at 0.5 units, should I increase it to the 1.0 units that he was prescribed for this dose??

I would increase to .75.

Would you mind changing the 911 to a ? We reserve the 911 for a hypo or if an immediate life threatening emergency. Thank you.

That is almost impossible for me to do on these needles (yes they are 0.5 units I just have trouble seeing something that slight)

Can you get a magnifying glass? Cats are very sensitive to the slightest dose changes. A drop of insulin can have a big effect. Can you try to get the dose to just below 1 unit line? You can practice with water and a used syringe. Here is a link to a post with images for fine dosing: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/lantus-basaglar-glargine-and-levemir-detemir.9/

Well, you can try the 1.0 increase but only if you can monitor really closely and have plenty of supplies. That means test strips and high carb food. An increase erase to 1.0 could be fine given his nadirs but he could have a big response at least at first.

I used to use a magnifying glass. Others have used a double set of readers. You might look into digital calipers for the future.

I agree with Katherine that you could also shoot slightly under 1.0.

I have not given him his shot yet, was waiting for some feedback here. As for testing, I put his used syringes in one of those sharps containers ... not sure I can get one out of it. So guess I will just have to add a tiny bit more

Since you've just started insulin, and it can take 5-7 days for the depot to build. Since you have stated you are following SLGS, I'd hold the dose for the full 7 days before considering an increase. We often find adjustments by 0.25u are the best. The mid range between lines on a syringe is hard to gauge, but I'd take up 1u then gently squeeze out a couple of drops.

Alright I have given him a tiny bit more than the 0.5 but still less than 1 unit. I will note it on his sheet. Should I keep it at this going forward to return to 0.5 units next shot?

You are correct. You was looking at the date if 6/2 and didn’t realize she had not started insulin. I missed that on the ss.

I changed the 911 to a "?". We like to reserve the 911 for medical emergencies. Those of us trying to help others scan the board for a "?" prefix, so it's a good one to have. And please remove the prefix when your question has answered. To change the subject icon, go to the top right of your first post, and you can see the Thread Tools drop down. There is an edit thread selection that allows you to edit the subject prefix.

Since you've done the increase, and have been getting plenty of tests in so far, you are probably OK to stick with the 0.75 units tomorrow. But that dose must be held for 7 days per SLGS, unless he goes under 90 at any time.
