Novolin Dosing Advice

Liam, 12 years old about 18.6 lbs (may have lost some with diet change) He eats only FF pate since 6/4/21. He is on 1 unit of Nolovin N 2x a day at 7:30 am/pm EST. (Yes Novolin isn't the best but it's what he was given before I had a say and I can't change right now) Testing with a True Metrix Air meter. His morning AMPS have been under 200 for a few days so I was advised not to shoot. I'm a newbie. Suggested go to .75 units. I think that's what I gave last night. He was good all night and is a free feeder. I do make sure he eats more than a 1/2 can before shooting this insulin.

SO do I shoot this am anything or skip he is 178? I would think to skip. He ate some but is getting to be his picky self and not always want the same food.

I know I need PMPS 3+ but I just had surgery and it's very difficult to test this week.

I've moved your post to the Feline Health Forum, which has more traffic than the Caninsulin/Novolin forum, especially on a long weekend.

We do ask new people to skip with a preshot of less than 200.

Thank you very much!! He is 187 tonight so I guess another skip? I'm nervous is it safe to keep skipping? I can't home test more than the pre-shots right now as had laparoscopic surgery this week with 10 lbs lifting restrictions. HE IS being a beast this week about testing and gaining strength (which I love) but not this week!

I think you should consider lowering the dose to 0.75 units. It's better to do that than skip a lot.

I will lower the dose. He's 172/174 on a 20 min hold. I should give him less then 0.75 then right?

Have you seen our BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO HUMULIN N/NOVOLIN N/NPH It suggests not to dose if below 250. But looks like your token dose might have been OK, given you were around to monitor.

Thanks for the link to the guide. I spoke with my vet and they said it's okay to give the 1 unit if above 200. One of the vets wanted to increase to 2 units but they also said they are not familiar with Novolin N!
