Hi there.. this is my first time posting after creating my spreadsheet and I just wanted to make sure I did everything properly. I'm officially dosing by what I read on here.. so I want to make sure I know how to ask for help if/ when needed. Please let me know if something is wrong on my part.
Thanks!
Amy

Hi Amy!

Welcome to the Lantus forum! :) I can see your spreadsheet linked in your Signature.

Could you also please add the below information to your Signature:
  • Caregiver & kitty's name
  • DX Date
  • Name of the insulin
  • Name of your meter
  • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
  • Dosing: TR or SLGS
  • DKA, ketones or other recent health issues (if applicable)
It's basically a summary of the information we need about your cat to give you advice. The spreadsheet and signature are the things we look at when asked for advice. It saves us asking you the same questions again and again, especially when the question is time-critical, like stalling or low numbers. It also saves you the effort of giving us the information every time you post!

I don't know if you've had the opportunity to look at the dosing methods we follow here? If you pick one, we can advise you accordingly.
Dosing Methods: Start Low, Go Slow (SLGS) & Tight Regulation (TR)

When you post on the lantus forum after his name putvAMPS and what it was
We do a new post every day and link the previous post also

Just curious why did you give 0.5 units this morning instead of 0.75

Thank you... i am still trying to figure out the basics of this message board.. how to post and how to find messages etc. I did .5 because I panicked. His pre shot # had never been below 200 before. And I increased to .75 by myself without asking here or the vet. I've updated his sheet with obsessively pricking him every hour today. And he never went into green. So I should have kept .75 huh? I was so scared I had the karo out and measured ready to go.
Also..i didn't put it on my spreadsheet...but my first vet who diagnosed him had him on 1 unit a day. From reading here..i knew he should be twice a day. But it took me 2 months to see another vet and make the jump myself (the first vet scared me with hypo overnigt stories). Would it be valuable when asking for advice to include those numbers ?
Thank you

Am I linking the previous post ok?
I am not sure of the dosing method. I think I've been trying to do TR. If that makes sense with his numbers so far? Sounds like i should go ahead and do .75 for his PM shoot. I did .5 because I panicked. His pre shot # had never been below 200 before. It was 182, I waited 15 minutes, 194, and then 15 min later 216. And I increased to .75 by myself without asking here or the vet. I've updated his sheet with obsessively pricking him every hour today. And he never went into green. So I should have kept .75 huh? Thanks for updating your signature. :-)

If you are feeding only LC wet or raw (and no dry) you can follow TR. If there is dry food in the picture, then you can follow only SLGS.

With SLGS, you hold a dose for 7 days (unless a reduction is earned). You decrease the dose when the BG falls below 90. The aim of this protocol is to keep the cat in the 90-150 range. This is more suited for caregivers who can't test as much as TR requires. You do a weekly curve with SLGS.

TR is a more aggressive protocol with increases as often as every 3-5 days. Reductions are earned when the BG falls below 50. The aim is to keep the cat in the range of 50-100 (which is the normal BG range for cats). To follow TR, you would need to get at least one more test per cycle in addition to the pre-shot one i.e. 2 tests per cycle or 4 tests per day.

With both protocols you can shoot any number over 150. Of course, if you start a cycle lower, it's good to get some tests in to see how low the BG is going. If you encounter a number lower than 150, you stall without feeding and post here for help. Put something like "STALLING! PLEASE HELP!" in the subject line so you get some attention to your thread :-)

I see that Cozmo was diagnosed in April 2021, but your SS has data only from June. Is that because that's when you started home testing?

@Bandit's Mom
Hi Bhooma thanks for helping Amy out
When it comes to giving advice about dosing I still do not feel that experienced to do that
Amy had asked me if she should have shot 0.75 this morning instead of 0.5
I'm trying to learn , should she have shot the 0.75?

She also asked if she should keep the 0.75 units going forward, I guess she means for tonight's PMPS

Thanks for updating your signature. :)

Thank you. So scary to think of him being that low
He only has numbers listed since June because my first vet only wanted him on 1 shot a day at 1 unit. So that is what he did for the first 2 months. I did test during that time..is it helpful to see those? I can add them. I just didn't think it was working properly at once a day based on what i read here.

A cat's normal numbers are 50-100 on a human meter :-) I know lower numbers are scary when you're new, but with time, you get used to them. As long as you can monitor and have the supplies (high carb and medium carb food, honey/karo, strips), you have the tools to keep him safe. And we are here to help you!

I can add them. I just didn't think it was working properly at once a day based on what i read here.
Yes, Lantus is best dosed twice a day. When you find yourself with nothing better to do, please add the numbers from April. :-)

Yup

Although it's really hard to eyeball such small amounts on these syringes
Which syringes do you use? Are they the 30 unit ones with half unit markings?

Ah.

This.. yes?
I did do .75 for his shot tonight. Although it's really hard to eyeball such small amounts on these syringes. So I hope it's .75. Although it seems like it could be .75-1 unit.
Good job the link you just did will be what you will put on tomorrow's post
After you put the Date , Cozmo AMPS. You will put that link in the spot where you would write something
Do you have the syringes with the half unit markings?

Yes...I have the half mark ones on the left. I pull into I just see a bit of daylight beyond the .5 mark on the right.
The black cat is my other love, Lucy. She is about 8 and learned to eat wet food quickly after Cozmo was diagnosed. I had tried to get her to switch many times before and she was not into it. But when Cozmo was diagnosed I took out all dry and now she actually eats some of the raw, thank goodness.
Ss is updated.. thank you so much.
