Im officially on the calipers bandwagon. Being able to know for absolute certain you're giving a consistent dose is niiiiice. :joyful:

I might have to change her syringes soon, however, and I hope the conversion doesnt mess it up too badly.

When I first went to grab the u100 syringes, I tried to get the Walmart Reli-on syringes first, but the lady wouldn't sell them to me. I think she thought I was a druggie or something. Eyeroll.

Had to get them from Walgreens, but they were a little pricier. Hopefully now that I have a script I wont be catching any sass from the Walmart pharmacists.

62 @ +2

Ah, gonna be one of those days.

Fed a teaspoon of 0% Tikicat (out of raw right now, needing to make another batch)

Aw, baby's first lime! (Oh, my adrenal glands :arghh:)

Seems to be slowing in descent, and nadir is almost upon us.

Gave another teaspoon of 8%, because I'm fairly certain next number will either be level or higher, and I dont want to shoot her to the moon with a higher carb %

You're both doing great!

47 @ +3.5

Knew it.

Another teaspoon of 8% just to nudge her up a few numbers.

She KNEW when she was quickly dropping because she was actively up and looking for more food, but now she's just chilling, happy to be getting these little snacks every half hour lol. "Peasant! Bring me more Steak Frites!"

Hopefully it'll just be a slow climb from here until PMPS.

Am I reducing? A skinny .25u maybe?

I have found that when Susie is in the 50s the medium carb is helpful. When she drops into the 40s I always feed a tsp of high carbs and test every 30 minutes. You're doing great, Wendy!

Looks like you are getting the "curve ball" today.

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier! That 62 at +2 was quite a drop - some MC may have been in order. Then and again at +2.5.

Let me tag @tiffmaxee on dosing.

I've historically been pretty trigger happy about carbing her when this happens, and she ends up responding a bit TOO well, so I tried a lighter hand this time [see: this thread, and this one]

I'm trying to find the right balance of what % to feed her and when, to keep her in optimal numbers and not accidentally aborting the cycle.

I feel a bit calmer than I had imagined I'd be.

Thankfully she decided to do this in the upper 40s and not the 30s, I'd be crying and freaking out.

Almost out of nadir!

Wendy, you are a pro at this dance! If she's still in the 40s at next test, you might want to add a dab of honey or Karo to the LC to make MC if you don't have anything higher than the Steak Frites. It might bring her up more easily to safer ground.

58 @ +4.5!

\o/

This was just pure food, too, I didnt break out the honey or karo. So I think shes out of the woods.

Will check back again in an hour and 2 hours, though.

I always had good luck with hc and rarely used honey.

We haven't really been at this game long enough to be able to tell a difference between the two, and I hope we never have to learn to lmao.

95 @ +5.5

Y'all see what I mean now, though? We can never just cruise nicely in the 70s and 80s for a while, its always right back up to the 90s/100s.

Do you only feed at certain times? Have you tried free feeding her in the early part of her cycle? Or is she just a glutton lol

Some of us *cough me cough* are lucky enough that our cats feed their own curves, which takes 95% of the stress out of it. Doesn't mean I don't get an occasional low, but he handles it mostly himself.

I suspect she might need to get used to it a little bit. But I've also seen that with some cats and Levemir, which is a little odd because it's supposed to be very flat.

104 @ +5. Sigh.

@FrostD she gets fed a good chunk at main feeding time, but then a mini meal at either +1 or +2.

(If it's subq day, she gets an ounce whenever I give the fluids to her (usually at about +5.5) otherwise she wont sit still)

I suspect she'd be great at feeding her own curve, but it's just the other cat that makes it difficult.

Olivia took to raw like a duck to water, but at the time Sophie wasnt interested. I decided this might be a good strategy to keep them out of each other's bowls for a while... but now Sophie's decided that since OBVIOUSLY, I've been feeding Oliva the nector of the gods, and she, poor sweet orphan Sophie, was being fed commoner's gruel, she wants in. If I don't monitor and Olivia turns her back, Sophie is there trying to get at it.

Even when I was feeding them the EXACT SAME THING before Olivia's ckd DX, Sophie was always trying to steal her food, when Sophie's bowl was still full.

I plan to invest in some of those microchip feeders that only open for a specific cat, but it's not quite in the cards right this moment.

I dont know what I would even put in the feeder, though, since the 8% apparently either doesnt cut it, or cuts it TOO WELL.

This is really good info to know about Olivia. It doesn't mean her carb sensitivity won't change, but it's good to know that basically zero carb is what you need to be feeding her to keep those BGs low. I found that once Ruby's pancreas started working again and her curves got flatter that I never really needed more than a little MC to bring her up from 40s, but she became a good surfer and stayed low. Maybe what you're seeing is not the effect of carbs but a little bit of a bounce.

Huh! Maybe? I've read about y'all's bouncey kitties, but to my knowledge we've never had one. Or maybe we've always gotten them but they were just too minor to be obvious.

Suggestions on how to handle this next time, then?

You handled today really well. The only thing you might consider is when she dropped from 111 to 62 at +2, to break out something higher carb than 0% Tiki. Maybe not the 8% but if you can get hold of a 2-5% carb food, it may have helped to prevent the drop to the limey.

It rather baffles me that she drops early. By looking at Olivia's SS you'd think she was on Lantus instead of Levemir.

Pretty sure I have some 2-5% FF still tucked away, but it's high phos.

It shouldn't hurt if it's just a teaspoon, right...?

Can't you mix 0 and 8? Half and half ish?

Fred (purrberry) was doing the same thing on Lev but I haven't checked on him in awhile

I mean, I've done it, but it's two cans of food for a teaspoon, on the off chance she goes that low that quickly again, and me hoping that civvie cat is cool with the leftovers for a couple meals.

This was my last can of tiki, need to go to the hippie granola place for more, then.

102 @ PMPS, I dosed her with the .10 to the best of mine and the calipers ability, fingers crossed for no drama tonight lol.

Ah yeah that makes sense. I had bought small meow mix cups as HC for that reason, hate wasting it

Maybe I'll try mixing it and then like - making it into ice cubes lmao.

Actually! I have some of those like, - puree cat treats in the plastic tubes that look like Gogurts, I think those might work. Need to try finding the phos info.

I actually do that with baby food lol I have silicone ice cube trays, work perfectly.

Ok, sounds like a plan, lmao.

Speaking of repurposing baby stuff for cat stuff - I'm loving the new picture of Mr. Kitty in your ss. Do you feed him using one of those rubber mat/bowl combos that kids cant spill? :woot:

:joyful: the rubber mat yes, water bowl is just plain plastic. I have a full towel under the auto feeder. He's just...sloppy. I don't get it. I'm probably too used to the dog, my glorified vacuum.

It works in reverse too, most cat toys make perfect baby toys!

LMAO

I almost bought one of those mats for Sophie, because she tends to accidentally knock her bowl off the ledge I feed her on, but my sister was like 'Yo, really???? /JUDGMENT EYES'

Maybe I'll do it anyway lol.

I'll keep the cat toys as baby toys tip in mind next time my cousin and niece come over. I'm sure my cousin will LOVE that ;)

I love Mr Kitty and I haven't even met him.

Black cat ✅
'Spicy' ✅
Paradoxically messy eater ✅

Ugh <3
