Novolin dose too high for 8 lb cat?

Good morning. My cat has been on Novolin insulin since March. She started at 2 UI and the vet bumped her to 3 UI since her at-home curve showed her numbers started around 394, but dipped only into the high 200's. She's been on the 3 units for about a week and a half.

I think her unit is too high at 3 units. Since I adjusted her units up 1 to 3, she started peeing (on me while I am sleeping and this morning on my dog's bed). It's not real stinky pee, but nonetheless, not pleasant.

I'm feeding her Friskie's Pate 1 can in the morning, 1/2 can at night (about an ounce per lb that she weighs).

Needing some help on her dosage. She did better on the 2 units and wasn't peeing all over, but her sugar was still high. Will lowering the dosage make her numbers stay high? She's only 8 lbs and has always been a small cat.

Hi! Sorry no one stopped by yet :bighug: I don't have any experience with Novolin but have you checked out the Caninsulin / Vetsulin and N / NPH board? At the top are a lot of "yellow stickies" (i.e. pinned information). In the Beginners Guide, there is guidance for starting doses. I'm out of my league here on N...I know @Wendy&Neko used Vetsulin to start and perhaps can help.

Are you by chance home testing? Sounds like you are? Setting up a spreadsheet to track your data (and so others here can see it) would help. Here's some info on it - How to Create a Spreadsheet & How to Use the Spreadsheet. If you need help, just ask and we will get someone to help you set it up :bighug: The New? How You Can Help Us Help You page also has lots of good info.

Also, the (2018) AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats recommends using Lantus or Prozinc to manage feline diabetes - could be worth the discussion with your vet.

Hope that helps a little bit ❤️

Sorry, I have no experience with Novolin N. It's not a recommended insulin for cats. The size of dose of insulin that a cat needs isn't directly tied to their weight, though starting dose might be. If you can get a spreadsheet put together, we might be able to help with dosing.

Thanks you guys for the feedback. I'll check out the spreadsheet. The last curve on the 2 units was not atrocious. Her numbers were in the 200s most of the day and then shot up to the 300's by the time she was due her second shot (she is always under 400 though), and she wasn't peeing all over everything when I had her on the 2 units. In some respects, I think, if it's not broke, don't fix it! She was doing way better on the 2 units. I went ahead and backed her down to 2 units. I'll keep her on the Novolin for now. Perhaps switching her to the Vetsulin would help in the event the Novolin doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I'm on thyroid meds, so I imagine there is a delicate balance here and managing this is a lot like that! Thanks again gang! :) Will check out spreadsheet and post update soon on Kiki.

Good to see some progress.

Vetsulin is also not a recommended insulin for cats. Prozinc and Lantus are much better insulins if you decide to switch.

  1. Most of us use Lantus, . Lantus is expensive in the US so we buy it from Marks Marine in Canada
We buy the 5 pack of solostar pens they will probably last you for over a year
With Lantus you use U-100 syringes with HALF UNIT MARKINGS
so you can increase or decrease by 0.25 units

With the pen you can only adjust by whole units, that's why we use syringes to insert in the little gray rubber stopper and draw out the insulin from there
The expiration dates will probably be 2022 or 2023 just keep them in the middle shelf in the fridge.
After that you will not need another script to reorder
Call them, your vet can probably just send them the script

Might be a good idea to set up your signature, it's at the end of everyone's post in gray

Click on your name upper right hand corner , a drop down will appear , tap in signature , fill out info
  • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback. There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.
