Urine culture came back, “E. coli, heavy growth” ... Orbax is appropriate; we are going to keep him on this for two full bottles (approx. 6 weeks)...

I forgot to ask the vet about anti inflammatories / pain meds - should I give him d-mannose daily for a while still? I don’t want to give him the other thing that was mentioned until I see what his calcium levels are in 10 days. Is there anything else that might help him?

we have some “senior kitty litter boxes” on the way tomorrow so he doesn’t have to use an aluminum Turkey roaster anymore :)

The Duralactin takes a while to work, so just as well to wait on it. Does he seem to be in pain? I think you can still give d-mannose. You might want to add a probiotic, given two hours apart from the Orbax. ABs destroy tummy flora and can give upset tummies.

Sorry about the curve, looks like that increase will be needed.

He gets NexaBiotic for kitties midday - since he gets clindamycin for the URI in the evening.

i think he’s gotta be in some pain ... he moves slower and is tentative when sitting or laying down. He pauses a few times while he gets into position. I notice his hind legs shake when he walks on my desk tho so it could be arthritis? Is there something that might help pain and inflammation from multiple sources?
I hate to add too much more to the cocktails that he already gets - LOL!

I’ll go to 6.5 tomorrow. Ordered an insulin refill already since it seems he will run out in mid -summer when it’s 100+ Where I live!

Neko ended up on buprenorphine full time, her arthritis was that bad, :( But bupe was a game changer, made a huge improvement to her QOL. I see some people do CBD oil, but I have no experience there. Neko also got acupuncture for pain. If you know for sure it’s arthritis, then fish oil can be anti-inflammatory and there are things like Adequan or hyaluronic acid that can help the joints,

I’m not sure if it’s arthritis or pain from the UTI, or weakness from CKD. I don’t think it’s neuropathy. Someone else on a different group had recommended bupe for the possible UTI pain so maybe that’s the one that will cover him regardless.

Is there a way to tell if it’s arthritis?

Next time you are at the vet, suggest that he/she check him out. I could feel Neko's arthritis - thickened joints. Sometimes it needs an x-ray to tell.

Can someone tell me quickly if I should set an alarm overnight and for what time? I feed him wet right before bed and we leave kibble out overnight ...

I'm sorry you didn't get the numbers you were hoping to see. I can't help but think the infection must have something to do with it.

As for the Duralactin, yes, get the calcium levels checked first so you know you'd be OK. And as Wendy said, the vet should be able to tell if it's arthritis...they could with my Sadie. She was having the same issues....hesitant to sit, moving more slowly, and not tearing up/down the stairs. It turned out that not only did she have arthritis, she had/has spinal spondylosis and tendonitis in her ankles. The Duralactin made a HUGE difference in that department. In like 4 days...new cat. I know I sound like I'm pushing it, but I just wanted to share my experience with it as it was so positive.

Sorry for the urine culture results, but at least you know what you're dealing with. When we first adopted Fred, he had bloody stool no matter what we tried. He was finally placed on Baytril for 6 weeks, and that did the trick.

@Purrberry thank you! Yes we should know his calcium a week from tomorrow. Vet is giving us something for pain for next 7 days, not sure what it is yet, but I’ll ask about this stuff next week! The more I think about it the more I think it might be arthritis. Wondering if I should back off the Zobaline in case it’s not neuropathy. I’d love to start eliminating unnecessary things - he gets so much ...

I hear you. I give mine all these supplements, etc, and who knows if they are doing any good? But as my petsitter said when I was embarrassingly showing her the routine, "Well, we take vitamins".

As for the Zobaline, if it were I, I'd keep it in. I don't think it has any taste, and with neuropathy, it may be something that you want to get ahead of instead of chase when it happens...kind of like pain. I just crush it and put it right in his food. That's just my 2 cents, though! Fred has some pretty decent neuropathy in his left hind leg, and because he is still in higher numbers, I can't seem to get it to resolve. Doesn't stop him from pouncing on me in the middle of the night for food, though! ;-)
