5/31 Sister Dosing Help, pls.

It's Memorial Day and no vets available to consult with except the online one at chewy. That vet said since Sister is not eating enough food and she thinks perhaps her eardrum might have burst, or she has a brain tumor, that I should skip the one unit Lantus injection this evening. And then start up again in the morning assuming she eats better.. I'm brand new to this. Would appreciate a weigh in on that recommendation. I am not doing any home testing. Her vet on Friday morning said nothing about that. Nor did she mention to skip Lantus if Sister is not eating sufficiently.

What made the get think she has a tumor or her eardrum burst without seeing her? When did you start giving Lantus? When was she diagnose and what were her symptoms? Without any tests I can’t give any dosing advice but if she’s not eating and since you are not testing I would skip and call your vet first thing tomorrow. :bighug:

Vet suggested tumor because discharge is clear and sticky and thickens like honey. Vet had not heard of discharge like THAT. Lantus began May 28, evening. She was diagnosed May 28 also. Symptoms were weakness in hind legs. Thought she hurt herself jumping off bed onto hard floors. She always drank and peed excessively, last 4 years. Tests in 2018 said NO diabetes and I counted on that, unfortunately. I have an emergency appt. this morning. Want to treat the inner ear infection and then restart insulin when appetite resumes.

Let us know what the vet says. If insulin is needed you don’t want to wait until the infection is gone to restart. That can lead to ketones and DKA. Both serious. Maybe see if you can get a Libre for the next two weeks snd work up to testing. :bighug:

I will let you know. The reason I stopped Lantus is because she is only on ONE unit and is not eating sufficiently. Just licking off moisture.

Yes. I know. It’s scary when they won’t eat. She sounds nauseous. See if vet will give you cerenia and better yet an RX for ondansetron.push for both.
The vet, whom I just met at a new clinic and like a lot, did not suggest nausea. Because if I gave Sister dry food, she would eat it. I do have Cerenia on hand for my bile duct issue kitty.
Sister got a shot of antibiotics and subQ fluids. I asked if the vet saw the slightly bulging eye and she did. Examination with a light of some kind revealed it is a cyst.
There was so much to cover that I do not know if she agreed the ear drums burst, but the antibiotic injection should cover it along with the Tresaderm ear drops she sent home with me.
On the insulin, vet feels we need to get her eating first, then resume the Lantus. She gave me prescriptions for diabetic dry food. Although Sister's other vet wanted all wet, 7% carb food, this vet says we can't get there just yet. We must get her eating something NOW. Even dry. I am on board with that.

When Max first got pancreatitis I thought he wasn’t nauseous because like your cat he would eat dry food and lick the liquid off canned. I was wrong. Maybe you cat isn’t nauseous but watch for this.

Diabetic dry food is very high carb.

"Diabetic dry food is very high carb."

I know it's high in carbs. I reviewed doctor Lisa's food chart a couple of days ago and bought all the appropriate wet foods. But I got backed into a corner here. At least for right now.

Well Sister ate heartily this morning and I was so pleased. I am nervous until she eats. I allowed her to eat a generous amount of 1/3 low carb wet, 1/3 chicken breast, 1/3 new Pro Plan DM dry. One & 1/2 hours later, she vomited every bit of it. I was convinced she overate and it was my fault. Then at 9:15 a.m. she vomited clear water. Remembered what you said about nausea and gave her Cerenia. She is still asking me for food, but I know from experience that cats sometimes misinterpret bad tummy feelings and think they are hungry when they are nauseas.

I still think she's nauseous. When they eat after being nauseous it's best to feed small amounts several times instead of a large meal. I am glad you gave her cerenia. It's way to common for all cats to get pancreatitis and diabetic cats get it even more often. Watch for signs of pain such as meat loafing.

Will do. I am familiar with meat loafing, and oddly, no vet I have described this position to has understood it.
Sister is lying around looking relaxed. Now I am researching the easiest glucometer to use on a kitty so I can purchase.
