Next step is to purchase a mini-refrigerator/cooler to keep his insulin at the proper temperature.

Any recommendations from the group? I've been shopping Amazon. Many of the coolers say they keep the cooler 35 degrees colder than ambient temperature. Yikes what if it is 90 degrees outside? That's not very cold.....

Thanks in advance for tips/tricks/recommendations.

Oh, we'll be buying a 1000 watt Jackery or Generark. Maybe I need to get one that is stronger? 1500 watts?

There's some information in this post on how to store insulin in a power outage.

I may not be remembering this correctly, but I think I saw @Chris & China (GA) post on this at one point. I suspect a lot has to do with how long you'll be gone. Also, if you are using the Lantus pen, it can be kept at room temperature. We advise keeping it refrigerated because cats use a much smaller dose than a human and keeping it refrigerated, helps to use what's in the pen to the last drop. The pens were originally developed so if a person was traveling, you didn't have to be worried about keeping your insulin cool.

Great! This is good to know. Also we have buprenorphine that needs to be refrigerated. Yikes!

Maybe just a really great cooler...... Probably we won't be out more than 2 nights in a row. I feel it's better to be cautious and stay close to home.

My Women-Only SUV/Car Living/Camping group is really up on the latest and greatest coolers.

Consider: wrapping it in a ziplock (to keep it from getting wet), and then putting it into a hydroflask with a skinny ice pack, and storing the hydroflask in the cooler you're already using for your food.

Who told you to refrigerate buprenorphine? I was told to keep it in a dark bag in a cupboard, away from light.
It is likely compounded buprenorphine for oral (squirt in cheek pouch) use only. It sounds like you have the injectable buprenorphine which can also be used orally. A lot of compounded liquid (and some capsules) have to be refrigerated to extend their life.
The compounded oral buprenorphine is a ot less expensive than injectable.

Mine is compounded and given orally. It's still quite expensive, though.

You might want to look into a Frio insulin cooling wallet. All it takes is cold water and is supposed to keep insulin safe for 48 hours in up to 105 degree heat.
These are excellent and long lasting. A necessity for traveling in warm to hot climates for anyone who carries insulin. The simplicity is great. Water works like magic with the little beads inside.
Of course if you are packing meat too, a cooler, yes!
