So over the past few days I've noticed that it takes tuna roughly an hour to finish a can of food. I take his pre-shot level and then I put down food and it's about roughly 45 minutes to an hour until he's done eating. Should I be pushing the insulin while he's still eating around the 30 min mark or should I wait until he's finished?

As long as you think he will eat the food it would be ok to give the insulin when you suggested.
Are you also giving him snacks during the cycles?

Do you think waiting for him to finish is ok? Yes I give salmon treats around nadir and if his BG is running low I do give some wet DM :)

What I do is split my cats feeding or meal into two portions. I give 1 can initially and 30 minutes later I give the 2nd portion with the shot (half a can). As long as she has ate that 1st portion or the majority of it I have never had any problems. She's usually always excited for the 2nd portion and will eat some more no matter what, but that 1st portion 30 minutes is my chance to see how well she is eating.

Her eating pattern through the rest of the day helps me decide to as I know she will usually keep eating and finish. It's only if her number is super low and shes not eating that I throw on the breaks.
