5/22 Pearl PMPS 91

Happy weekend, Margaret. Pearl is looking good :D. My kitties go in waves too, sometimes spending a lot of time lounging around. Extra scritches for Pearl :cat:

Hi Margaret!

When I am looking around, and see your Pearl thread, I'm always curious. You were already knowledgeable about Cat health, and you learned quickly about FD. I was also praying for Chessie along the way. I believe Tina's FD may have resulted from prednisolone, and she was eating a high carb kidney diet for about 3 months (caused some muscle wasting). Weruva is my savior (haven't tried raw in 3-4 yrs; at that time, only 3 of my 6 would touch it.)
With your expertise, if anyone could go OTJ while needing Pred, I think you are one to do it for Pearl. I hope and pray for OTJ for all, because my short 5 months giving insulin and getting up during the night, did hurt my health. But being a long term diabetic myself, I "understood" (I thought, lol) and was excited to " save" Tina! Thankfully I recovered! And my girl is fine, besides dealing with other age related things.

It's great that little Pearl is under 2 units. I was lucky and sometimes feel bad for others who have a longer road than I had. I'm SO grateful for all I have learned about Health on FDMB. Big hugs of continued strength:bighug::bighug:

Oh, Tina has her active days and lazy days, and I think the weather is usually her reason. You be well Pearl.

Hope Pearl's energy picks up. It's going to be a steamy day for us in the NE and thunderstorms are coming tonight so that might be why. She's looking really great, though. Glad to see her coming down in dose gradually. Have a beautiful Caturday, Margaret!

Hi Christie and thanks! I always get nervous when Pearl seems to prefer one cozy corner of the couch and...that's it. Not even coming up to the bed at night. And of course I had a nightmare about it too the other night which doesn't help.

Pearl never recovered her playful exuberance after her 2 cat buddies flew over the rainbow bridge almost a year ago now (March and September 2020). And then in December Pearl got FD. So I am still trying to figure out her patterns for days when she doesn't do much at all.

Happy Caturday!

Hi Jan! How are you doing? I haven't posted much lately. I've had work-life-balance dramas and it's messed up my schedule for my own health. Thank you for your note! I have been wondering this about Pearl - so, it's likely she got the FD from the Prednisolone. But now she gets it so infrequently - maybe once every 4-6 days, and it hardly seems to affect her when she does get it - but yet she is still a diabetic. So I don't know now if it was only from the Pred.

THANK YOU for this encouragement!! I really needed to hear it today. I know you know this road is HARD when you have your own medical issues to contend with also, and truly I want the best for my girl and that is to be FD-free if possible. It was really easy for me to learn FD with the help of you, @Wendy&Neko and @Marje and Gracie. It came naturally to me. I am trying to figure out how I learned it so quickly so I can help other people who seem to get "stuck". I can't believe Pearl is under 2 Units!! Thank you for noticing! I was waiting to mention anything until we get a couple more reductions under our belt - hard for me to believe we are really under the 2. I don't want to jinx, lol!

What I am most grateful for is the Pearl seems to be scaling down without going under 50 a lot. She just stays "normal" for so long I have to try to reduce. I really love that and appreciate that so much. Maybe she will just walk her way straight out of FD.

You know what I have noticed that is curious? - as she gets lower in her dose, the time of day I give the Pred affects her differently. For example, if I give it PM cycle, her BG goes up a lot higher (still same temporary duration) than if I give it during AM cycle, in general. No idea why that is. But it's interesting!

AND...thank you for the prayers for Chessie, too! She is pretty stable now and loving being a part of a family. She adores Pearl to the moon and back, literally. Instead of hiding in my bed all day, she now spends her day with Pearl in the living room, sleeping in all the places Pearl has just slept in lol! I still have some uncertainties with aspects of her health, but am trying to observe and make mental notes so I can tell over time what is "normal" for her and what isn't!

Hi Katherine! Happy Caturday to you and Ruby and so glad your girl is home and getting back to her normal routine! We were supposed to have the storms but they got displaced by a HOT weekend - 90s down here!

There is a catbird who has made a nest in my shrub in the back yard. Yesterday the landscapers removed all the dead shrub and didn't tell me it was protecting a nest in the live shrub left. So I've already been down the main road today to find dead branches and make a shelter. Sweltering out there!

What is your weather like in Maryland. Florida is very nice but I think it might get hot this afternoon. Have a wonderful Saturday, Margaret!
Hi Summer! So Maryland is just....gross. The weather flip flops on the daily so you never get used to anything. That is basically it. It is mild in winter and hot and muggy in summer. The humidity gets into the houses. I wish I lived in Florida - that is truly my goal some day if I could find a job. Hope you and Susie enjoy your Caturday!

Interesting pattern on timing of giving the pred. It really does seem to be ECID on that, but you've got it figured for Pearl. Remind me again the pred dose you are giving?

Hi Wendy! Pearl gets the 2.5mg about every 4th day (but it looks like I've forgotten just now oops are now we are on day 7 without it!). I am hoping as she continues to scale down in insulin dose (I hope) that the Pred won't start to affect her more, but will stay the same as it has. No ideas yet!

If you want to move to Florida you will fit right in with the hot and muggy summers. I would think this time of the year would be beautiful in Maryland. Hope your dream comes true to live in Florida. Reading the paper here there are all kinds of employers who can't find people to hire. Restaurant, retail, etc. Seems everyone retired during COVID.

I was curious about your dosing cause I have a kitty getting pred, who seems to need 1 mg daily. Not diabetic though.

Pearl has gone up and down over the past 2ish years with the Pred dose, primarily for the asthma. Whenever I was able to successfully get her off, she had to go back on. Now I think we are closer than ever to getting off, but I am hesitant to try it b/c she has other inflammatory conditions and right now everything is stable. I don't want to upset the apple cart somewhere then have a domino effect. That would be horrible.

What do you give your kitty Pred for?

Small cell lymphoma, and a side helping of food allergies so probably a touch of IBD too. The pathology mentioned both, PARR testing confirmed SCL Too much pred and she gets eye ulcers, too little and the barfing begins.

Can you do Budesonide seeing that it’s SCL / IBD and not lungs or liver? Not sure if you’ve considered this before?

Neko got budesonide because her heart couldn't take pred, so yes, it was discussed with the vet.
I honestly don’t ever know how much or how little Pred to give and in what spacing. Pearl doesn’t have a signal like throwing up. Over time her breathing will deteriorate if not enough Pred is on board. I like the 2.5 mg spaced out every 4-6 days bc it’s not always in her system them and can counteract any inflammation that starts up between doses. That is my theory. That’s why I do this rather than 1.25mg every day or every other day. That’s how I figured out my dosing. I don’t know what I will do once she is consistently at every 6 days or so. Just stop it? Try then 1.25mg a bit more regularly? I have no idea, I guess time will tell! I hope the Pred can help reverse the SCL for your kitty that must be tough to struggle with.

Thanks. The pred just lends a hand at this point. The chlorambucil (Leukeran) is a chemo drug that she gets every two weeks and does the heavy lifting. And (antijinx), she's in remission now. What is the struggle is 3 cats in a row with this. :banghead:

I found out what pred dosing works by experiment too.

I am so sorry to hear about the 3 cats with SCL. That is rough! I had to do chlorambucil for 1 cat, that was difficult enough! For me, it's 3 cats in a row now with chronic Pancreatitis. Thankfully the current 2 seem to be controlled. My first one was not able to be controlled and she declined rapidly.

I am happy to hear yours is doing well on the SCL treatments!!
