5/20 - BUDDY - AMPS 100

One concern I have is Buddy still isnt gaining weight back like i'd hope. His weight pre-October before he got Giardi infection was around 12 pounds. At some point during the worst of the recent diabetes he was 8.5. He's up a bit at 9.2 but i haven't seen any gain in the past week. Are any particular foods good at helping him gain weight? I'd feel more comfortable If he can get to 10-11 pounds. Thanks.

What food is he eating now? There are a lot of opinions out there as to how many calories to feed a cat, but I like to use 20 calories per pound of IDEAL weight as a guide. So if you'd like to get him to 11 lbs, he would consume 220 calories per day. The food label should say how many calories are in each can and you can do the math to make sure he's getting enough. There are some brands like Tiki and Weruva that are low carb and have a very high moisture content which is great for cats but are low in calories so not great if you want him to gain. I used to feed Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblets to Ruby who is somewhere between 11 and 12 lbs, and that has 84 calories per 3 oz can so I'd give her 2-2.5 cans portioned out throughout the day, depending on how hungry she was. There are some Wellness pates are also low carb and fairly high in calories, maybe 30+ calories per ounce. That's what I'd look for in a food if I wanted my cat to gain weight without too much of a burden on my food budget. You can look for low carb, high calorie food options using this handy chart: https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

A variety of Wellness brand, tike, nutro, and whole hearted. All low carb type wet foods. I appreciate all this input, will def look at that chart!

Unfortunatly I was too busy today to do a +6 reading. Then Buddy decided to eat all his food 30 mintues before PMBS, so of course we ended up with a higher number 176. Fingers crossed he's lower in the morning.

That's OK, just to let you know you have the wrong date on your spreadsheet for today, you have the 19th listed twice.
It doesn't just have to be mid cycle all the time, most of us test more than twice a day.
If you work I totally understand, maybe you can get a few tests in at night at different times if possible.
Have a good night :cat:
