Yesterday on To Ruby, with Love. :cat:

This morning Ruby was watching squirrels and birds at the bedroom window and came to nudge me awake. I tested her, gave her her shot, and she went to her feeder unprompted to eat the spoonful of 12% MC Weruva Devour Me duck and tuna I left in her bowl last night. I gave her a few more spoonfuls of it mixed with a half ounce of raw turkey and bison and she cleaned her bowl. This makes me very happy. :) I am not so thrilled with her AMPS but we will get her back on track as long as she is eating.

Hi Katherine, so happy to hear Ruby ate. This journey really gets to all of our emotions, our joys and our fears. If only they could talk and let us know how they feel, what they need, Dolly won’t even tell me what she wants for dinner :p. Hoping Ruby continues to eat well, is a happy contented cat and gives mom a chance to breathe after the roller coaster ride last week. Hope things with Olive are fine and she didn’t pick up on any perceived enemy scents from Ruby. Have a good day. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
A few more nibbles of food were eaten this morning and some water drinking though less than yesterday. Saw her making little gagging movements as though she would puke so I gave her some Prilosec. Otherwise she's been very clingy and affectionate, headbutting me and nudging me for pets.

Thanks, Adrienne! I am so relieved this morning, as last night I got out the feeding syringes and watched the assisted feeding video a few times in preparation. Glad I didn't have to resort to that today.

Olive has been staying away. The two of them normally sleep curled around each other in a single warm ball of fur, but they have barely acknowledged one another since yesterday. I don't really blame her, because Ruby has a WEIRD, sweet, perfumey smell to her fur like someone rubbed a car air freshener all over her. Could it be the smell of some antiseptic they applied to her in the hospital? I need to rub her down some more later with a warm wet washcloth or get some cleansing wipes. She might enjoy the rubdown. :cat:

Hi Katherine, just saw, Ruby is on the beach :cool:, that is the best news. Dolly always has that smell. When I rub my face in her fur I’m always saying “Dolly you smell so good”. I use unscented litter, nothing on my carpet so I don’t know where she gets that scent, it’s weird :p. I hope Ruby continues to eat and her numbers get back to familiar territory :D. She’s been through so much but my husband always assures me they have a very short memory ( how does he know that, a cat in a past life :rolleyes:?). Have a really good day and hoping Ruby and Olive’s bond wins out over strange smells :cat::cat: Sending hugs to all :bighug::bighug::bighug:

In addition to helping to remove the scents from the clinic, remember to try to Re establish the “family” scents :) ...if you can use your shirt (worn vs clean) & also, if available, a blanket/bed that’s got her special and unique scent on it & massage her with them—-that should help :bighug:

For future visits, you can always rub her down with a towel before she goes to the vet, place that towel in a plastic bag to keep the scent strong, & then use it to give her nice “scent” massage right before or as soon as she gets home.

know what I think that perfumey scent is? Scented cat litter! I kid you not. We, as you probably know, have lots of foster cats and kittens. When we were fostering for one particular group we would drop the kittens off at PetsMart in the morning and pick them up in the evening. They always came home with this perfumey odor on their fur. I was kind of irate at first wondering who this woman was that was getting her stinky perfume all over my kittens every day! After a while we just stayed with the kittens and helped with the adoptions and cage cleaning, etc. it was then that we figured out what that smell was! Why they would use scented cat litter I have no idea, but in the case of the rescue groups they have to buy the cheapest stuff or take whatever is donated to them!

OMG! You are totally right! It’s been a decade since I’ve used scented litter so I am unaccustomed to the smell but of course that’s what it is. Poor Ruby! Why anyone would ever use that stuff is beyond me. I can smell it on her when I enter the room she is in.

I know. She must hate smelling like that!
 
+2 = 70. Ruby's BGs have been steadily declining today and it seems like she is feeling much better. She and Olive are thick as thieves again and she's been running around the house with her tail straight up in the air. Now that her tummy seems better, she's not in a hospital, and she's not eating kibble, I hope we can put these high numbers behind us for a little while. I've got my Ruby back. :cat:

Definitely a flare. Until we do a scope/biopsy I will never know for sure if it's an IBD flare. IM did not want to rule out pancreatitis but she's been tested for that a lot, whereas every single one of her ultrasounds have shown GI inflammation. This experience has taught me that I can use meds to help her get over these flares and I should not be afraid to use them.

You got that right, Wendy! She's been eating spoonfuls of MC all day and she is still dropping.
