5/10/21 - Squeaky! AMPS=79 +1.5 = 81 +2=83 +3.5=151 pmps=310 +6=108

Nice that Squeaky enjoys his walks in the frontpack. I hope he surfs safely today.

Thanks Carla, well it looks like I wasn't fast enough. He went and hid under a chair, so..... later LOL.

I see that Furball has been seeing some nice blues lately. I hope it's a trend, not an event! Have a great day.

Hi folks,

Squeaky was 79 this morning and we are on a trip. He wouldn't eat his regular food (all protein), I gave him some canned food (don't ask me how much carbs it has unless you can tell me how to read this on the label), and then shot.

I need to test him at +1 to see if he's rising, right? One would expect a bounce after a number this low.

If he is rising, and I can get him to eat more carby canned food, then he'll be all right until +6 correct? I'm visiting my 94-year old mom and it's inconvenient to come back at +3.

Also is it time to change dose.......

Or is it time to change to modified GLGS (with a decrease number at 80 or maybe 75 instead of 90) so I can have an easier time managing him safely?

Thanks much to @Bandit's Mom @tiffmaxee @Wendy&Neko @carlascalico @Summer and Susie @PerfumedCatMom and any others who have been helping and who might respond!!!!

canned food
You can't get the % carbs of total calories off any cat food label but if you tell us what brand and flavor, we may be able to help look it up. My memory is fuzzy but I thought on the last trip you fed canned food and it was pretty low carb.

When are you leaving to visit your mom? At +1? or at +2? If it were me, I'd grab a test as close to +2 as you can (since you like to minimize tests).

+1 will generally only say if the kitty has a food bump or not (new dose of lantus won't onset till around +2).

Thanks so much for your fast response, Susanne!!!!!

He ate about 1/3 of a can of Koha Limited Ingredient Beef Pate. It says 96% beef. Ingredients say crude protein 10% Crude fat 7.5% Crude fiber 1% moisture 78%. What on earth does that mean??

He also ate a couple pieces of cooked beef sirloin, and a couple of kibbles. Now he is sleeping under the big chair.

I will try to feed him again at +1, whatever he will meet.

Not only minimize tests, I'm staying at a hotel and can't go see mom until I leave here.

Thanks much!!!!

I'll calculate the carbs for you. The side of the can just says the GA values - more on that here (but in summary it doesn't tell you what you want too know).

I know you are at the hotel - was just seeing what time you needed to leave? sounds like ASAP. So I would take a test at the last moment and post here.

Again, I'll get the carbs for Koha Beef for you - give me a minute

Based on the info on their website and using the post here, it is 2% carbs.

You can increase the carbs by mixing in honey if he'll eat it.

Wow I didn't see anything on the can about GA... but it's a smaller sized can. I'll check your links and hopefully learn something. I do have an assortment of other foods here.....

2% well not much is going to happen with that LOL. I will add some honey and see if he will eat a bite. Take a shower. Then test again. Am I doing this right?

HAHA I can give him some greenies. He'll eat those right away.

Yes. Post after your shower to see what the honey has done. It will wear off quickly though.

Haha I had cut the greenies in half. So I used the honey to glue the halves back together, no problem he ate 2 or 3 like that.

Then I put half a greenie on top of the 2% carb beef food, kind of like a little patty. He ate about 4 like that. Plus several plain half-greenies.

I suspect this will do it????

Good luck with Squeaky. That low AMPS was reason for concern so the extra food is important. Will you be gone all day? Looking forward to the next test and I hope you have a nice time with your Mom.

Thanks Summer. I usually come back around +6. And Mom is waiting for me!!!! +1.5 was 81, what to do next?

Yikes I should have given a reduced shot this morning.

I guess more greenies with honey, right?

How long has it been since the first round of food?

When will you be back to check on him?

Well I started feeding him before he got his shot.

I'm obviously staying here until he's safe. Then, probably can be back in about 5 hours to check on him again.

EDIT: just gave him 3 more greenies with honey

Here is a calculator. It is not exact but comes very close. When I would shop I had this on my phone to check the foods. Then check against list (at that time list was new, now outdated). The % was only off by 1%. When I get info from companies, and checked, again only off by very small amount. So this calculator gets you close enough with info from cans.

What other food do you have? I'm wondering if any of it's high carb and he will eat it while you are out?

He's allergic to chicken but loves it. I brought a small can of tiki cat after dark chicken and quail egg and he'll probably eat most of it right now if I give it to him.

pretty sure it's low carb based on ingredients alone. I'd probably stick with the koha beef if he's not allergic to it and add honey to it.

Okay I added honey to the koha beef. He had another 3 greenies with honey. His +2 = 83 so far he has not been going down. Safe to leave or do I need to wait another 1/2 hour and test again? Or give him more greenies?

@tiffmaxee

I just gave him a bunch of kibble and he gobbled it down. Hoping to leave now..... I also put more kibble out for him. He loves it.

Well, I'm going. I suspect he will survive. Hopefully I will survive the afternoon with my mother, after this.

Cheers, and many thanks.

Sorry I missed your tag somehow, but I see you were in really good hands. You did really well, Jan. :bighug: Hopefully Squeaky's sensitive tummy won't take issue with all of those treats he had today. Glad you got to see your mom. :)

@Bandit's Mom Bhooma, do you think it's time for me to switch back to GLGS with a reduction point of 75 or 80? Thank you.

Actually I think we should make it 80 and since we had 79 this morning, I am going to reduce .25. Please correct me if necessary!!!!

Plus we have already had a 56 and a 69, I really think it is going to get too hard to control for me. So I'm reducing. Please correct me if necessary. Thank you!

Just saw this and looks like you took the reduction?

Since you are travelling (visiting your mom, right?), it makes sense to reduce. But when you're back home, it might be better to be more conservative about reductions. We can talk about that when you are back. Let's see how he fares on 4.5U. :-)

Hi Bhooma, yes we reduced tonight, but can change it back any time of course. Tomorrow is my last day with mom, then a travel day on Wednesday.

I just don't want to repeat what happened today, tomorrow on our last day together. So 4.5 u for the moment!!!!! Thanks :bighug::bighug: and I'll let you know when we're back. Cheers!

Remember that the previous depot will continue to influence the next few cycles and the effect of this dose could be felt only after 4-6 cycles.
