Hi, my 18 yr old sugar cat Lolly has been in remission since 2015, now dx’d with stage 2 kidney disease. Can anyone recommend a food that will support kidneys but not send her out of remission?

Lolly has been on FF classic pate since 2015. My vet says I need to put her on a special kidney care diet that is lower in protein. The vet has recommended Hills k/d and Royal Canin renal support E. Of course I am concerned about adding carbs to her diet. The vet says at this point it is more important to support her kidneys than worry about the diabetes. She says it’s unlikely that Lolly, 10 yrs in remission would relapse (I know that’s not true). She says she’ll live longer even if she needs insulin than if I continue feeding her high protein Fancy Feast.

Hi Martha
You are right, if you use the Hills k/d or the Royal Canin which are both high carb, Lilly will fall out of remission.
what you need is food that has high protein, low carbs and low phosphorus levels. It is the low phosphorus which is important with kidney disease

If you look on the link I will post below you will see a column that has phosphorus amounts. Look for a food that has phosphorus amounts of 250 to 200 mg phosphorus or less per 100kcals.

Thank you so much. It never ceases to amaze me that Univ of Pennsylvania trained Veterinarians just don’t “get” the diabetes thing. Also why did she say nothing about the role of phosphorus?

Thank you so much for taking the time to list out these foods- and tell me which ones were “favorites”.

Is Weruva ok to feed civvies with no diabetes or kidney issues? I’m dreading having to separate out Lolly fir feeding. Also I don’t free feed, but I leave theFancy Feast out fir a while after feeding as a couple of my cats (I have 4 civvies) are slow pickers. If Lolly is the only one on Weruda I’ll have to keep her locked up for a while each time the civvies eat. Of course I haven’t looked at prices yet... but it would be so much easier to feed them all the same thing.

one more question: safely switching to another diet, how much would you replace each day?

Of course. It’s not a prescription food. It’sa good high quality food. They are very transparent with their nutrition facts on their website.

Hi there. You need to feed your kitty whatever she will eat. Eating is paramount. If you can find a low phosphorus, moderate protein and still relatively low-carb food for your Lolly, then you need to monitor phosphorus levels as the vet recommends. High blood phosphorus levels are very damaging to the kidneys. You can feed any food that Lolly will eat with phosphorus binders (such as Aluminum Hydroxide) or you can also use Niacinamide to keep her blood phosphorus levels down. You have a lot to learn about kidney disease, and I recommend going to felinecrf.org to learn everything you need to know about cats with kidney disease. They have a tremendous support group as well that can really help navigate the waters of kidneys disease.
