Hello,

I posted a few days ago asking about glucometers and a low number (link below if anyone needs context):

https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/01-05-21-new-member-minino-intro-question.241060/

My numbers have been a little messy until recently, because I got a little scared and adjusted the dosage. I have been injecting 2.5 units (Lantus) these few days and it seems like he's started to get some pretty stable numbers (from 04/26 on).

However, I tested his glucose again tonight and I got 88, I'm waiting up just in case because he doesn't seem to have a consistent nadir time. He ate some more food so I'm going to test again in a little.

The last time he dipped below 90 (also late at night) I panicked and gave him some high carb food so he went up to 176 (on 04/21) and then was at 111 the next morning. That's when I reduced the dose from 3 to 2 and his numbers started to go back up.

I created a spreadsheet and have data from the last two weeks. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what to do tomorrow morning based on what I get for his AMPS or tonight's lowest number. My syringes can only be adjusted in increments of 0.5. Let me know if you need more info / data!

I hope this all makes sense, it's almost 2:30 am here and I'm a little tired :/. Thank you so much in advance!!

Just tested again and he's at 73, 5.75 hours after his PM shot. He ate some of his diabetic food a little less than an hour ago and I just gave him a little more. I'm not sure if I should give him some higher carb food at this point or if I should wait a little longer and retest.

73 is still a safe number but I'd plan on retesting. In the future, it's a good idea to have some canned, high carb food like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers. It takes less time to break down and get into the bloodstream and clears out faster than give dry food does. I'd pop the top, put it back down and squeeze the gravy (that's where most of the carbs are) into another bowl and give a couple teaspoons of the gravy.

Have you decided which dosing method you're going to use? Tight Regulation or Start Low, Go Slow?

Ok thanks so much! I retested and I got 80, will wait a little and test again. I have canned high carb food but it's pate, is gravy better? I can get some.

I originally wanted to try TR but I think I'm too scared to keep it so low, especially since the numbers I've been getting are so varied / inconsistent. For example today, going from around 200 this morning and most of the day (and the last few days) to suddenly below 90 tonight. So I think I want to try SLGS.

Tested again and it's 85 at +7, I think he should be ok so I'm going to get some sleep. I'll give him a little more diabetic (not high carb) food just in case. I guess that according to SLGS I'm supposed to reduce the dose by 0.5 in the AM? Maybe I'll maintain the dose if the AMPS is above 200 and reduce if below?

Thanks again!

I like the gravy better because it's so carb heavy...usually a couple teaspoons of gravy is enough but IF the cat drops again, you want them to be willing to eat more. With gravy, they're not going to "fill up" as easily as they would if they were eating food.

You want to reduce by .25....and if you're going to do SLGS, it doesn't matter how high he is tomorrow, you should still do the reduction.

Oh ok! The gravy trick is good! Thanks!

I could only get the BD microfine needles 0,3 so I can only adjust the dose by 0.5 unfortunately.

Finally at +7, he had 109, so I'm definitely going to sleep a little now. What needles allow for .25 adjustments? I can see if I can get them in Spain. Thanks again! Good night!

Unfortunately, there aren't any. The best any of us can do is the half unit marks so we have to eyeball the .25 and .75 doses.

Ok! Thanks so much for sending the photo, been trying the 2.25 and getting around 150-215 for now, will keep trying to see how he does!
