Hey all, its been a really long while since we have been on here. Mufasa has/had been in remission since September of 2019. Since then I would test him here and there just to keep a watch. He has been in good spirits and so have we. Since the start of his remission, his numbers would range from high 60s to like low 90s depending on what time of day it was and when he ate. But he has had no insulin during that time. No need for it.
I don't know if I had mentioned but we become fur-parents again to a wonderful pitbull named Chase. We got him Spring of 2018. Chase loves Mufasa, but Mufasa is like old Mr. Wilson from Dennis the Menace. He just rather not be bothered with him. LOL Flash forward.... over the past couple months, I have been catching Mufasa stealing kibble out of Chase's bowl. Chase doesn't eat bad food, but I know the difference with nutritional value between cat and dog food. More recently, which switched Chase to a part kibble part freeze dried raw food (Instinct). And I think that is part of the reason Mufasa has taken a liking to it. I catch him paws up on the dogs bowl (because the dog's bowl sits up about a foot and a half from the floor on a stand), nibbling. I get him out of there the soonest I catch him.
Since he has been doing that, I have seen a little spike in his sugars. Not bad, but enough to be like "Eh, let me keep my eyes on him". Last weekend, my husband brought to my attention that he thinks that Mufasa is acting strange. He said Mufasa is normally screaming for attention an hour before feeding time (he does, he acts like we starve him. But he gets all the freeze dried treats he wants), and this day he wasn't. So I said I will go check him. Well, his sugars were at 171. But he wasn't sick or anything. No signs of anything wrong. He was sleeping peacefully in his heated cat house in the corner of the living room before I snagged him up to test him. So, I fed him dinner and told my husband I will test again tomorrow (Monday). In the meantime, we started picking up the bowl at night.
Monday afternoon before feeding him lunch (usually 11:30 but this day I was late cause I work from home), I tested him. WHOA!! 223!!! WTH!!! I didn't have anymore insulin because it expired and I tossed it. So, I contacted the vet to ask for a refill. I got the refill and then tested him before dinner. It came down a little to 181. The doc increased his dosage from 0.5 units twice a day to 1 unit twice a day. So, I gave him the 1 unit. Then tested him 4 hours later, it came all the way down to 63. I made the decision with help from the FB page to decrease back to 0.5 and go from there. I decided to do kind of a curve the next day.
In the morning, AMPS was 102. I gave him 0.5. And he hovered throughout the day between 72 - 85 for the first 5 hours. Then I test him 8 hours after, and he was at 130. Then his PMPS was 136, and I gave him 0.5. 2 hours after, he shot up to 146. 4 hours after he went down to 97.
Next day he was still at 97 for his AMPS, so I didn't give him an insulin. I tested him 5 hours after breakfast and he went to 123. PMPS he went up to 134, and I gave him 0.5. 4 hours later he tested at 58.
This morning, he was back up to 132 with his AMPS so I gave him 0.5. At lunch he was at 78. I am going to test again at 6pm which is dinner time and normally shot time. But after talking with Chris, I decided not to shoot him if he is under 150.
Question is.... is it possible to only need insulin for a couple days and then be ok without it again??
Keep in mind, there is nothing else wrong with him. He is eating, peeing, poohing and running around like a kitten still. We are getting more in the habit of picking up Chase's bowl when he is done eating after a few minutes and especially at bed time.
I updated my chart, too.
