Hi! I can’t seem to find Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Overweight Management savory select on the food chart. I was wondering is anyone had any information on the carb content of this food.

My vet retired and the new bet at the practice is pushing this food because Benny is a little overweight which I know. He’s going on 11 and has slowed down a little. He needs to lose about 3 pounds. He currently eats Friskies Pate the very low carb ones. He’s done great on them and has been in remission for awhile! I’m very wary of changing foods. These look like they have gravy and would be higher carbs. I’m not a fan of prescription foods to start with. Thank you for any help!

Purina Overweight Management or "OM" is on the food chart - see page 61; looks like one version is 21% crabs and the savory select one is 17%.

For info on helping kitty lose weight, you may want to check out Dr. Pierson's site (same vet that made the food chart) - https://catinfo.org/feline-obesity-an-epidemic-of-fat-cats/ - lots of info there like recommended calories, rate of losing weight, etc.

Also, as an additional recommendation, I would invest in a baby scale so you can weigh Benny at home and make he's not losing too weight too fast. Salter baby scale is recommended a lot on here - I personally have the Beurer one since it had a flat base (and lower price point helps too).

Smart woman!!

The key to losing weight in cats is the same as it is in people...less calories going in, more exercise to burn what's already there.

You can add water to his Friskies (kind of like making him a "gravy") which will help fill him up without adding any calories.

Find some kind of toy that gets him moving. Laser pointers work for a lot of cats. China's favorite was "Da Bird".

Weigh once a week and adjust as needed! It's not easy, but it never is (for cat's or humans)

I will second Chris on: Smart woman for not being a fan of prescription foods. We had our own fight with this topic but 21% carbs or 17% carb for a diabetic cat in remission and for an obese cat o_Oo_Oo_O

Here is a link for you to be able to calculate the caloric carb content of different foods: https://secure.balanceit.com/tools/_gaconverter/index.php

Another thing that might help to control the weight is buy a kitchen scale and give the same amount of food every day, you can adjust the amount of food based on the results you see. It helps us keep Chico's weight stable.

We weight Chico on a human scale by standing on it with and without him, if you are not ready to invest in a baby scale.

So he’s11 lbs but should weigh about 8? He’s time for a boy. I would just reduce the friskies a little. As more water to it, and try to get him moving more... chasing strings and dot pointers. Weight loss foods are often too high in carb. Tiki cat has a lot of lower cal foods that low carb.

He’s going on 11 years old. He’s actually 17 pounds and should be about 14 pounds. He does like the laser pointer! I had him on Tiki cat for awhile and then he stopped eating it. We always joke that he’s gotten awful snobby for a cat who came from the streets lol

Thank you for the link! I never thought of using a kitchen scale. That’s a great idea!

Oooh ok I misunderstood. Ok so going from 17 lbs I wouldn’t feed the calories for 14 lbs all at once or he will be starving. So say you would want to do 15.5 lbs as the first goal. 15.5x 20 is about 310 calorie.

all 5 of mine are backyard finds... and I have 5 feral cats. They are food snobs too.
