My name is Henriette my cat Bamse got diabetis, he is 10 year Old and he get the medicin prozink 1,5 dosis 2 times a Day. We startet up 23/3 with medicin and i am werry confust about all the informations
I soo affraied too doo somthing wrong i love my cat and vant him too get Old
My Vet dount mean i must tjek his blodsukker but just give him his medicin nekst week we tjek the sukkerlevel by the Vet and that okay but is that god ?

Hi! Welcome! It is very scary in the beginning, but we can help. Diabetic cats can live a long life with treatment. The best chance to keep him safe is by checking the blood sugar level at home.

what is the name of the insulin that he is getting?

where do you live? What is your native language?

To get you started.

1. You Should check the blood glucose at home. First buy a blood sugar meter in any of your pharmacies, these are the CE approve models in Denmark https://www.apotekeren.dk/medicin-og-sygepleje/apparaturer-og-tests/blodsukkerapparater
I personally have Bayer Contour for blood sugar since 2007 and Abbott Freestyle Precision for Blood B-ketones since 2008. Bayer Contour is a very good and dependable one, which strips requires least blood to sip and is very fast. Besides you have to continually buy the test strips too, and Bayers comes in 50 strips to a certain price, so check with you pharmacies.

2. The bg tests you do, you should keep daily journal of, as well as insulin amount, food amount, food types e.t.c, so you should get a better Year Calendar Journal to keep at home and diligently write in everything in. You will need that at the vets and when you set up our Spreadsheet here.

3. Create you Signature here, it will stay up under each of your posts, with the quick and short info in. Bamse's name, age, Diabetes since when, what insulin type, amount, and other disease diagnoses, and then Your bg test Spreadsheet linked into it.

I'm going to tag @Bandit's Mom to see if she can help you set up a spreadsheet (SS), to track the BG (blood glucose) levels once you start home testing. It's easier to have someone else do the initial SS setup for you, if you have a smartphone.

You will need to download the Google Sheets and Google Drive apps for your smartphone, if that is what you will be using to update your spreadsheet (SS).
