Since it looks like you're following TR (based on your signature)...it's time for an increase.

Not sure what 'partial fur shot' means...I probably missed those conversations...

Your cute kitty needs more insulin. Can you increase at PMPS?

partial fur shot is it started out fine, then he moved on me and some of it escaped. He has little to no scruff. I tried his flank this morning and it was a lot easier. Yes, I will bump him to 2.5 tonight. Thanks!

I don’t give dosing advice, but are you sure about the increase given the two recent fur shots and his proclivity for huge dives?

Well, I'm basing my concern on those terribly high numbers - holding the dose for too long which leads to insulin resistance, years of experience and my reading of how to handle lower numbers: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...y-to-shoot-handle-lower-pre-shot-numbers.147/

In order to prevent those dives I would encourage more testing and paying closer attention when the numbers drop 100 points or more at any time.

For instance on 3/21 he dropped from the 400's to 139!! WOW!! That's a red flag for an active cycle - at that point I would have done the following:

1-set a timer to get another reading in an hour.
2-Feed medium carb food to try to slow the drop
3-Make sure I have supplies on hand to test further into the evening should that kind of dropping continue.

Rinse, repeat...

Oliver was giving a clear signal that he had an adventure in mind with that significant drop. I see the same patterns on 3/10 and 3/12 - big signals of an active cycle.

It takes time to learn what all of that means and how/when to respond...but it'll become more clear over time. All we can do is try our best to figure out what these kitties are up to...even I miss the signs sometimes...:bighug:

On 3/19, 3/20 and 3/21 I did give him (small amounts) of medium carb food to slow his roll.

It was at a dose of 3u that he had a 6 hour hypo event and I admit it makes me nervous as we get closer because I never want to experience THAT again. He had been on 3u for a week when that happened. His hypo was at +2.5 That’s how I met this great group. And, I learned of always having an AMPS and PMPS.

Yes, I see that one instance on 3/10 of a 46...you handled that very well!

And then the bounces start...it's typical of a cat that goes lower - he's not used to those nice greens and is going to be a bouncer until he becomes more accustomed to those lower numbers.

So just be patient...increase slowly, hold for a minimum of 3 days (6 cycles)...if you don't see better numbers, increase again. You're seeing the highs/lows of it because of the bouncing...

It does take a while until they settle down and stop with all the zinging and zanging...

Hang in there...

I don't give dosing advice but per TR, you should hold for 6 consecutive cycles - the partial fur shot restarts the count. It's up to you of course what you do but FWIW I haven't seen kitties fast track TR (but I also don't hold a candle in experience to Sue or the mods). If it was my cat, I'd wait to increase.

:bighug::bighug::bighug:FWIW, you didn't know what you didn't know - we are all so glad you found FDMB and Ollie is okay. Now that you are testing, you'll keep him safe :bighug:

Any history of ketones for Oliver? I'm not a big fan of increasing at PMPS - simply because there's a chance that he'll respond and you'll have a PJ party - not a big fan of those...

SO as long as hopefully the numbers are coming down today - not black - and there's no history of ketones - then Susanne has an excellent point - you could wait until morning...you're the one holding the syringe. :)

until morning
I had to edit my post because I didn't realize the FS was so recent (I was counting from the other FS :)) - so the FS was just last night, so 6 cycles would be PM 03/27 with the earliest increase 03/28 AM. They had a previous FS on this dose too but IMHO the depot didn't get to build then either. IDK on dosing just was pointing out the consecutive cycles wording in TR and I'll leave the rest to those with more experience :bighug:

I will wait until we are safely past those fur shots. And, I agree! AM is the best time to change the dose ... I can keep a close watch on him!

I also don’t like increasing on the PM cycle.

Shelley, for what it’s worth, I always tested more when the numbers got lower because I wanted to see exactly how low he was going. My guy could have crazy drops and, kind of like bungee jumping, I wanted to make sure he didn’t hit the rocks. Also, catching the lower numbers helps determine whether the dose needs to be lowered or increased or stay the same. When you have the kind of movement Oliver has (and my guy had), it’s not always easy to extrapolate. I’m not convinced Oliver isn’t hitting greens you’re not aware of — but that might just be my cautious mind (have seen seizures too). It also seems that Oliver’s +2, although helpful, isn’t always a good indicator that he isn’t going to drop like a rock.

Just my two cents. :-)

Oliver’s PMPS is only 111. This is his lowest PMPS ever. I had already decided to hold off on upping his dose, but now I know I won’t. I should still shoot though, yes? Shoot low to stay low ... gah!

I’d get a +1, +2, and +3 to see how things are trending and go from there. What are your thoughts?
yes! That is exactly what I was thinking. I want to see if there is a food bump. If no food bump at +1 or +2, especially if he drops, I plan to give him a couple teaspoons of medium carb food. That usually helps him. Then I’ll try again at +3 and decide from there. Thanks for validating my thoughts. Appreciate it.

I just wanted to say "hang in there" and that you're doing an amazing job. I have a real bouncer as well, and he's just started entertaining me with greens that lead to blacks. For Fred, even his rare blues lead his liver to panic. One cycle last week, he dropped 600 points in one cycle...while I was on vacation! I have a feeling there were more greens than caught, as my petsitter (who was amazing) couldn't test overnight. So I'm a little lost on dosing as well.

Anyway, just a wave from a fellow bouncer! All good thoughts to Oliver!

Gah! These dudes! Don’t they know they give us heart failure!? Their little livers are giving us the business! I think Oliver secretly enjoys this as he gets gravy food when he scares me. I hope Fred finds his way out of the black soon!! Thanks for saying hi -
Shelley
