My cat also has mega colon. It seems like lately it’s been worse and the vet said that Royal Canin Fiber Response is a big help for this problem. I tried it before Lenny was diabetic and he hated it. She said to try again. I’m worried about the carb content. I’m not sure how many carbs are too much in dry food. Can someone help please.

thanks

Cosmo @thebigfuzz has a megacolon - perhaps Tanya can stop by when she can and weigh in on the food. It looks like Cosmo gets some RC Fiber Response kibble and they feed some wet food too.

Lenny gets Miralax and Lactulose and is going to start Cisapride. My vet wants me to start Fibre Response but I don’t know how it will affect his numbers

The fibre in fibre response is just HUSK. Psyllium fiber. Worked like a charm on my constipated civvie. No need for the carbs, just add the fibre to his regular low carb food.

Hi! I’m just at work, but will respond once I am home. I will say that for many Megacolon kitties, this considered a miracle food (RC gastrointestinal fiber response). It helped a ton when Cosmo was recovering and helping to establish regularity. We also feed him wet food and gradually decreased the dry food over time, until he now gets 11 pieces a day.

of course, the carbs in dry food and kibble in general isn’t advised for diabetes regulation, so it is a balance and a choice. Megacolon can be life threatening on its own, so deciding what the priority is currently may be a factor.

I’ll come back later!

Hi Nancy,

I can’t say that it hasn’t affected his numbers by feeding a high carb food and dry food. Our approach is to increase the insulin where the numbers warrant according to SLGS to offset the carby food.

That said, Cosmo is a particularly difficult to regulate kitty and his megacolon and diabetes diagnosis was within a month of one another, so our food approach and trying to balance his multiple conditions was so close to one another that is hard to say.

I hope that helps and that The food works well for Lenny.
