17 year old Muscat was Diagnosed less than 24 hours ago. Noticed something was amiss when she was walking around the house with flat back feet and no longer was jumping onto the counters. Vet prescribed her 1 unit of Glargine every 12 hours with food.

Just ordered Glargine from VetRx, but it won’t be here immediately. Waiting until stores open at 10am here to go get supplies. I have so many questions:

1 unit, is that a milliliter value?
Meter recommendation? Test strips, lancets, sharps containers, all of it? What brands do you love I need to order everything to get her headed in the right direction.
Saw pre-filled syringes online, is that the better option so there’s no air exposure to an open vial that is getting pulled from?
I saw Tiki Cat and Weruva had low carb wet food options, are there flavors that are best?

Thank you for all of your help. I will take any advice and recommendations your lovely group has for me.

Are you in the United States? If so, I would recommend the Relion Prime or Premier test kits. They are very accurate and inexpensive. You get them at Walmart. I love the convenience because you can order online and get free delivery the same day. I use the Relion ultrathin Lancets. They are a easier for a beginner because the tiny needle is a little larger making it easier to get a blood sample. It makes it easier on your cat because you don't need multiple tries to get a blood sample.
CVS pharmacy has great prices on their insulin. I pay $99 for a vial. As far as sharp containers, most of us just use empty water bottles, juice or milk jugs or anything with a screw-on cap.

Thank you! It seems like Relion is the choice of the forum, so for ease of support looks like that’s the route we’ll be going.

A lot of us order Lantus Pens from Canada - lots of info here - https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/buying-insulin-from-canada.203498/ - your vet will have to provide a prescription to them but after that, it's so easy! They are the nicest people. Maybe just file this away for when you need a refill after your initial order from VetRx.

Awesome job getting a glucometer - some tips here in case you need them: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/hometesting-links-and-tips.287/
-at a minimum, test before every shot. Lantus is dosed on how low kitty goes so getting some mid-cycle readings is good too.

You'll also want to get a spreadsheet up to record data and your signature -

Hope that helps - please post when you are up and running; you may also want to check out the Lantus board - lots of good info at the top in the pinned sticky notes - https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/lantus-basaglar-glargine-and-levemir-detemir.9/

Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets
Cotton rounds to put behind the ear in case you poke yourself, then press gently on the ear for about 15-20 seconds to stop the bleeding

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
