Hello!

I 've been feeling like I was going to have to reduce Hercules soon, but I think I went to careless with thinking I could always bring him up. He reached 45 at +7. I just gave him a lick of honey and 2 tbs of HC. Hopefully an overreaction... but the last 2 tbs of HC hasn't done much. He is not showing any symptoms. Should I just keep him monitoring him every 30 minutes, I should I pack him to the vet?

Definitely monitor every 30 minutes. The food takes that long to kick in. The syrup works faster but wears off faster. That’s the take action number but should not have cause a symptomatic hypo. No need to go to the vet. It’s late enough in the cycle. He will come up.

btw Elise, I have been hoping to catch your ear.... Hercs was diagnosed with pancreatitis yesterday after doing a Spec flpc. his result came back >50. However, he has no symptoms. So I was wondering if there is anything that this diagnosis change in the way I should manage him? Any thoughts?

He has come up a bit at +7.5: 54

But is not very much considering 2 tbs of HC and honey....

I know is late in the cycle...but I have seen him continue to drop to +8. Should I give him another tbs of HC to be in the safe side?

Do you have MC? Strike that. Give a teaspoon of HC. Not a whole lot.

I do.... but last time I gave him that he threw up.... so i think is best to mix LC + HC? I went ahead and gave him 0.5 tbs og HC about 10 minutes ago, so I'll measure again soon and see what that has done.

He tends to dip late in the cycle. Bobs up and down. So it was good you fed the HC. Better to be safe!

Max was over 50 on the SpecFPL. It’s strange to not have any symptoms. Why was he tested for it?

+8 : 56 with AT2. I know I should mix and match but I was curious to see how low was he... yes. glad I gave the extra HC, and maybe need to given even more?
He ate a whole 80g can of HC on top of his usual food.... no wonder he is gaining weight !

Why was he tested for it?

I am not totally sure what was the vet worry. She is supporting me, but is worried about the food I give him. When he was first diagnosed with diabetes she did some abdominal imaging and thought his pancreas might be a bit enlarged. So she wanted to check. I was a bit reluctant, but he does go every now and then not wanting to eat for about half a day, and then gets better, so I tought it wouldn't hurt to know. But now I am not sure what to do with this info.... Vet wants to switch him to a hypoallergenic diet, my reading of the literature suggests that this helps when there is IBD issues, which he doesn't... so hence me asking you....

Maybe just a little bit of honey? Fewer calories?
And please don't mix and match meters! How're you going to log that in the SS? :-)

The only symptoms Max had at diagnosis was inappetence. I didn’t realize it was caused by nausea back then and nobody suggested pancreatitis until he totally stopped eating. I would not change his diet if it’s pancreatitis and not IBD as well. Max had only pancreatitis. Even with IBD added often a novel protein helps. I don’t 100% trust the testing. Diabetes and kidney disease can raise the SpecfPL but with a 50 it’s very likely. Did your vet give you cerenia or an RX for ondansetron?

nope. should I ask for? i guess he currently does not seem to suffer too much with nausea. As you can see from today's performance he ate for two! But is this something that I can keep in my backpocket and use when he gets a bit under the weather?
Can I ask how long Max managed with pancreatitis, what I am scared to ask, but really want to know is... does this diagnosis impacts his prognosis (I cry just asking this question...)?

Max had chronic pancreatitis for a few years before he became diabetic. So he had it a total of over 7 years. I think it’s why he didn’t go into remission.

It doesn’t sound like Hercules is having symptoms of pancreatitis or IBD. Has he had an ultrasound?

HONEY!!!!!
Done! I usually just smear some in his lips and hope he licks, which he does. I tried this time mixing with a bit of the gravy so he could get a bit more (~1/8 tsp)? Good or bad idea? and how much should he get?

He definitely wants that reduction!
indeed! when I first got the 49
at +6, I tought shoot I let him drop, I'll ignore it... Ha! He is making sure I do not!

I think so, when he was first diagnosed with diabetes and he had lost of lot of weight and looked rough. It was exploratory to see what was wrong. So it wasn't for a specific look into pancreatitis.
I am always unclear as to what can we do with the actual diagnosis of pancreatitis, there doesn't seem to ever be a treatment of the inflamation per se? Is it worth getting a ultrasound? Did you consider going into steroids or antibiotics?

I usually dip the tip of my finger in honey and smear it on Bandit's mouth, lips. Stick my finger in if she'll let me. She doesn't like honey.

I think an hour is good.

With pancreatitis you treat the symptoms. If there’s IBD diet changes can help. I’d try a novel protein, one he has never eaten in the past and see what happens but again he’s not showing symptoms.

yikes! He went down again! +10 is 50!

Not sure what to do.... If I feed him I won't know what to shoot... but he is just not really convincing me he is up?
I already adjusted the caliper, but I am wondering what to shoot him tonight? I have tests strips, but I don't want to break the record of strips used in one day....;) I am really exhausted!

if he is dropping below 50, you feed him - the no food two hours before does not apply in those cases.

use honey so he won't be too full or too fat! :)

ok, I gave him a 1/2 tbs of HC again... He hates honey!. I can delay his shoot time by 15 minutes and still know where he is.... I am nervous about what to shoot him tonight....

How’s the appetite? You have had to feed a lot and he’s been stubborn. Something to consider when deciding about tonight.

I have given him a lot of food today, So far he is up for it....but the vet complained that he shouldn't gain any more weight... one day is not the end of the world though... i guess I can start with HC earlier, which are smaller portions?

With all that he has eaten including a much hc, are you at all concerned he will not eat? He will a so close to 50. You can shoot the new reduced dose if you feel ok. You could shoot a token dose if .25 or you could drain the depot and not shoot. What do you think?

I think he will eat, and I don't want to ruin all the good progress..... I am just really afraid I will stay up the whole night, I have a lot of work to get done by monday...

A token dose will not mess him up. Why do t you grab another test? It’s been over 2 hours without food so we need to see the current bg.
