2/9 Fortune AMPS 352 - Hospital wants to admit him

Last night was rough - Fortune seemed very sleepy, drinking lots of water, pale pink gums - and we were trying to figure out if we should take him to the ER again. Well, he started PURRING - his purr has been gone since January! - and then became interested in a treat, so we took that to mean he wants to stay home.

He snuggled all night with us, while we barely slept checking on him. Whew!

This morning Red Bank VH called us and said that based on Fortune's records he cannot wait to be seen til Monday (!) and he should come in through the ER to be hospitalized and seen by oncology tomorrow morning. We were told the same thing Sunday - that if he stays overnight he MIGHT be seen - but this is coming from the oncologist who has reviewed his case, so I'm hoping it's different.

We are so conflicted - we want him to get the best care and believe they can provide it. Already they are proactively reaching out, whereas the hospital where he has been getting unsatisfactory treatment (BP), let him go Friday with a "so long and good luck til Tuesday." OH - I forgot to mention the IM overseeing his care there EMAILED US that Fortune's chest XR showed he may have lymphoma in his lungs, or it may be a fat deposit. WHO EMAILS THAT NEWS?!

So we are compromising by bringing him in this afternoon to be hospitalized overnight, even though it's painful to be without him for a night, we are hoping hard that it means he will come home to us. They want to be able to "perform tests" on him. We were speaking to the tech, not the doctor, so she couldn't give details, but I'm already hopeful they will be giving him better care.

We will have to wait and see and hope that they thoroughly reviewed his records so he doesn't needlessly need to go through more testing!

We have the BP oncologist this afternoon at 2:30, but we aren't sure if we will keep it right now, since we want as much QT with him as possible before he has to stay overnight.

Prayers. My cancer kitty started treatment via the ER. If this is large cell which was suspected from reading on the scl group and they think chemo will help, getting started quickly is key. The chemo will make him feel better. They don’t treat to cure like with humans so it buys quality time when it works and some do go into remission. If prayers can help and we have seen them help many here know you have so many of us rooting for Fortune to be successfully treated. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I know- I'm just so angry that he was discharged with no treatment after his hospitalization, and so scared for him to go through it again! Trying to find and hold onto hope. There's a reason we dragged him to this hospital on Sunday in a snowstorm, and I'm grateful for the few days we have had him home. I'm hoping hard he gets the treatment he needs.

He ate 85% of his breakfast (two cans) and is still interested, but clearly nauseous. He went over 36 hours without being fed during his hospitalization last week! He received fluids, but poor bunny was so hungry and exhausted!! He is fighting hard to be here and we are trying to fight equally as hard to get him help!

I just wish I had their rationale for having him hospitalized. The doctor told the tech that based on their review of Fortune's records, he needs to be seen immediately and be hospitalized. :nailbiting: Not knowing their reasoning makes it harder instead of having all of the facts to make a decision.

I would ask about starting treatment but treating him otherwise at home unless there is something they can do there that you can’t do at home. I agree with all you just wrote. I’d like to say a lot about that first ER. It won’t benefit anyone though. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I forgot to write the fact that he’s eating means he’s fighting! That’s a very good sign. My cats would not eat when hospitalized.

Thank you! My Fortune has always been resilient and I’m hoping like hell we give him what he needs to keep fighting!

I hate that he is going to be in the hospital again, hate hate hate it. But we aren’t going back to that first one, so trying not to let my anger and trauma take the wheel. Dang, it’s hard!

He has to be hospitalized in order to be evaluated, since the next appt is Monday and the onc believes he needs treatment before then. I hope to have more info, once he is being seen. I tried to see if we could bring him in at 3am tomorrow lol, and they said they “want to do tests” as part of the eval, so it’s best he comes in by early afternoon, latest.

Hopefully it prevents another anemic episode, and gets him feeling better

So Fortune rabbit is hospitalized at the ER. He is in stable condition, but very dehydrated. Right now his gums are pale pink, but not white (or anemic). The doctor brought up that the dehydration may falsely show more RBC than there are, so while right now he does not seem to need a blood transfusion, that may change.

We discussed that based on what the lab work shows and how he does tonight, he will be transferred to oncology tomorrow (yay!), possibly with a consulting internist. We discussed him starting chemo tomorrow potentially, and possibly a fine needle aspiration on the mass in his kidney.

His tummy hurts on palpitation, and they are going to give him ondansetron, and if it doesn't improve, some pain meds.

It was so hard to make the decision to go in, but we are hoping so hard that he comes home to us with an improved QoL.

Rachel they seem like they are really on the ball with Fortune.
I know you hate that he's there but they seem like it's a much better place than
before, Sorry to hear his tummy hurts but at least they will give him pain meds .
Sending prayers your way, we all love Fortune ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

As hard as it is on you, it sounds like Fortune is in exactly the right place for him right now. I hope they can get him sorted quickly so he can come home soon. :bighug::bighug: Take advantage of this time to try to catch up on sleep. The load may be heavy on you again when he comes home.

Thanks everyone! Fortune sends purrs and affectionate head butts back to all of you!!

We definitely are much happier with his care so far. I forgot to mentin that we discussed his FD - she asked if we pull back on his dose when he doesn't eat as much (which we do), and we discussed that they take BG tests every 2-4 hours depending on what is going on. And that I can request a copy of his curve for my records (I share that I track :)). :woot:

Already the doctor on his case in the ER is giving him much more elevated care and communication.

We are hoping he will come home tomorrow, but we expect the latest to be a two night stay. Either way, we expect to have a MUCH clearer picture of what is going on with Fortune, and keep him more comfortable than he was.

They have a cat ward separate from the doggos and those in critical care, so the hope is Fortune stays stable and is able to hang out in the cat ward for the night. Just talking to this doctor made us feel a lot more hope and more at ease with the decision to bring him in.

We are so grateful for everyone rooting for our kitty! Tonight we are going to show our neglected second child, Marty, some affection before we turn in early, and hope not to hear any news til the morning! :bighug::cat:

This place sounds really good, Rachel. I breathed a big sigh of relief reading your update. He is getting good care now. I'm glad you and DH can rest a little easier knowing that he is in great hands, and being kept comfortable.
Sending more vines and prayers:bighug:.

Rachel. I will keep praying for your and Fortune. I agree that this place sounds like a really good place for Fortune to be... like he is getting so much better care.
