Yesterday we were worried Fortune was dropping low, and today he is sky high! We went to bed after PMPS +3 because he was up into the 200s.

I'm really worried about this high reading. We didn't give him any different/new food. Will check again in an hour but at what point should I worry about DKA?

He is drinking tons of water. The good news is his eye that I thought may have something in it - because it was squinty and he was pawing at it - seems to be open. We are snowed in still, but I am going to try and get it looked at tomorrow just the same.

@Wendy&Neko we started feeding Fortune (& Marty, our other boy) twice a day because they would eat all the time and got pretty plump :) When we switched to wet/raw food in 2014, it also made sense because we couldn't leave the food out all day. But if it's better to feed smaller, more frequent meals we can adjust - especially since at least one of us is at home due to the pandemic.

Maybe a bounce after yesterday's low numbers. Does he have a history of ketones, and do you test for ketones? (I'm a fan of the blood meters rather than the urine test strips; I can test on the same drop I use for BG measurements.)

We have urine dip sticks, but he doesn't have a history so far. We haven't had him reach this high, and the last time he was in black he was at the vet and they tested.

So scary! Gonna poke him again at +3.

So worried. It came down to 519 but what could be causing the spike? I'm worried he is in pain, could that cause high BG?

Like Lisa said, it's likely a bounce from yesterday's low numbers. As long as he didn't get any high carb food, that's the most likely culprit.

What date was the vet visit that tested for ketones? I'd try to get a test in today since you already have the dipsticks.

So I figured out why his BG is high! The stinker got into the garbage last night. Chewed right through it in several spots. I swear I don't know whether to laugh or cry! We were up late last night so the door to the garbage was probably left open (we keep the garbage secure for this very reason).

The test was on 01/13 but I will also try and check today. He loves to pee first thing in the morning or late in the day, so I have been stalking him.

Naughty kitty! Glad there's a clear reason for it. Probably not much to do but wait it out (and check ketones just in case).

Naughty kitty indeed! Glad to see the garbage cleared his system and he came down to a pretty blue for dinner.

I fed the same amount of food, just split into multiple meals. That is easier on the healing pancreas (we hope) than a large amount of food at once. At if you have a kitty that drops hard at onset, a small meal 20-30 minutes before onset can slow those fast drops. Fast drops also cause bounces.

Sorry about the eye. My current SCL girl is tapered down to almost nothing with the pred (1 mg per day) because otherwise she gets eye ulcers. I also keep some topical eye drops around for flare ups. Inflection/inflammation can also caused increased BG numbers.

Evening Rachel. Nice PMPS after that little stinker got into the garbage.
30 inches of snow, I have had it.
Now I hear they are talking about another one on Sunday, they don't know yet.
Better not be, There is no where to put the snow anymore.
I hope you and Fortune have a good night . Kisses for him ♥:bighug::cat:

Ketones were negative, phew!
