Casper just returned from hosital, BG reads 509, vet says no shot until Wednesday!

Hi Elise @tiffmaxee , @Bandit's Mom, @Critter Mom,

We finally got Casper back from the vet. However, the discharge instruction is, do not give him insulin, BG readings are not realizable as he is estabilishing Casper as a CKD patient rather than Diabetic, because he ran the fructosamine report and it shows his BG is normal, non diabetic. We don't really agree, but we wanted him to release Casper, so we didn't say anything.
I just tested Casper, his BG is 509!!!! How could I not giving him insulin?!
Pls help and advice!!!!
 
I'd be giving insulin and asking for copies of all bloodwork/tests that were done on Casper to be emailed to you. You paid for them...they belong to you.

Diabetes is already very hard on kidneys, so when it comes to cats with both, the diabetes must be taken the most seriously. You can do all the treatments in the world for CKD but if the kidneys are still under excessive strain from trying to filter out excess glucose, you're not doing Casper any favors.
 
His fructosamine is in normal range because he was getting insulin. He needs it and I would give him .75.
 
I've asking whole day for all the hospital notes and the reports, so far I only received one! Updated in my signature with today's date. That's it. We spent over $4k there for 3 days and I couldn't even figure out what's wrong with him except put him on fluid and V12! *S!

Very true Chris. Two bad ER experiences and now a bad vet. It appears the CKD is advanced as he’s anemic. He’s already had 2 or 3 transfusions. This vet didn’t even know about epogen or Aranesp.
 
And this vet is AHHA accredited, 4-star reviews on Google and yelp, has been in the business since 1984! How the HELL?! I am so pissed and I still don't have the reports I paid for! Why do I need 2-day for them to process it?!
 
I really don't know what to do. I mean we always checked the reviews wherever we go, make sure they have all the services Casper would need. We ended up with worsen CKD and now bad anemia! And I still don't have his BG under control!

Rekha commented that she feels I might get better Veterinary care at the Waste Management!
 
Another question,
For diabetes, we use low carb., high protein food;
for CKD, we need low protein, low phors food...so do I give him diabetic food or renal support food?
 
I found that an internal medicine vet was helpful in managing multiple conditions. Neko had diabetes and CKD, plus heart condition and small cell lymphoma.

For diabetes we use low carb food - it does not have to be high protein. You can get some foods that are higher in fat and somewhat lower in protein and lower in phosphorus. For CKD, it depends what level of CKD you are dealing with. In earlier stages, is more important to give good quality protein so they don't have muscle wasting.

Thank you Wendy! I will start looking for vets specialized in IM.
Casper was at Stage 4, that was the diagnosis from the same vet that thought we were just wasting our time and money on Casper. The same vet believes Casper does not have diabetes. :arghh:
