Sebastian has been on prozinc for several months now. He was up to 9units a day with these numbers on the calendar. We test pre shot and at midnight. We decided to start over with 3 units a day and his numbers are in 400-500+ consistently. I guess it's time to move back up again, it's been a week. It doesn't seem to matter what insulin or how much it rarely goes down. I'm at a loss
So are these numbers all on the 9 units? Has he been tested for acromegaly and IAA? It's really very likely he had one of these conditions and we usually recommend that it is tested for when they reach 6 units. My cat has acro and at her highest was up to 12.5 units. This is a spreadsheet we use here that makes it really easy for us to track his progress because you can link it in a signature. https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/ How did you raise the dose initially? When exactly was he diagnosed because that seems alike a really fast track up the dosing scale if it's only been a few months. Usually the dose is raised in 0.25-0.5 increments.
He was on 9 units of vetsulin for a year. Started at 1, moved up in half units. Then September we started prozinc and they started at 1 and it's been up to 4.5 units 2x day since being at the ER with 600+ glucose level that was back in November. At 9 units a day we get lower numbers. But the morning is always high and always bouncing.
Oh ok I thought he was just recently diagnosed. So he's getting two 4.5 unit doses, not 2 9 unit doses? Ok that makes more sense why you were going back to 3. I thought he was getting 9 units at each shot.
It could be that he's going lower at night and bouncing up. I would suggest getting a morning preshot, a mid day, a pmps and a before bed reading at like 4-hours after the shot or set an alarm (I know that sucks) and getting a reading 5-6 hours after the shot. The insulin is working because I see it going occasionally into the 100's. It would be helpful when you take the readings to note how much you gave, and how many hours after the shot the mid cycle readings were. What are you feeding?
I thought the exact same thing too Janet. So you're going from 4.5u per shot down to 1.5u per shot? Just want to be clear, might make a difference how you interpret what Janet is recommending. @JanetNJ - can you please clarify? You mean 3.0u per shot right?
Yeah he gets his shots 2 times a day. We check before each shot and a midnight. This week were trying 3 units each time. But I have a feeling we will be back up to 4.5 and have to do even more because 4.5 wasn't working good either
We're at 1.5 units. Still highs to lows but a lil better than before https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...3I2QANCFbdq6yjODw47oz93ngtE/edit?usp=drivesdk
So do you think the higher dose was sending Sebastian high? I only ask as my cat was ok until a little while ago, I have tried lowering and am now going higher to see if the BG drops. Has Sebastian always been on Prozinc or did you start with another?
He was on vetsulin for the first 8 months. But we weren't home testing then. 3uints 2x a day. But he was in the 600s at his check up. So then we switched to prozinc and started home testing. The vet kept increasing and it was up to 4.5 2x day and suggested adding a 3rd dose of 1 unit. So then we started lowering it and switched kibble to Dr elsey clean protein and his numbers have been lower on 1.5 2x a day than anything so far.
Thank you for your responses, I love the photo of Sebastian I have completely gone off biscuits as I suspect it was the Purina 1 that sent my cat downhill, keep kicking myself! Thank you
Your kitty is precious too, thank you. Going off kibble for us unfortunately isn't an option as I have 6 cats, but the Dr. Elsy has really made a difference. I tried young again but we had a few kitties throwing up on it. Sebastian still isn't regulated, but I like seeing lower numbers. He's 18 and so skinny. But I cherish every minute
