12/22 Moo Moo AMPS- 344/ +2.5-261/ PMPS- 158- Shoot?

Hello,

Moo Moo is recently diagnosed and unregulated. The past two nights I have skipped Moo Moo's pm shot due to her low PMPS. She has not shown ketones, and this is the lowest PMPS she has had so far. Should I shoot tonight, or skip?

I am still struggling some with taking readings, and she is starting to get irritated with them. I tried to get one at +9, but that didn't go well. I'm trying to not stress her out, but I know the data is important. Does anyone have any tips?

Hi, I struggled for 6 weeks. It was torture. Ruby's ears were scabby and I was so worried about hurting her and ruining our bond. I finally got the right technique by using a lancing device with a clear cap so I could see where the needle was landing on the edge of her ear. I make sure her ear is super warm by rubbing it with a rice filled sock that I heat in the microwave for 20 seconds. I use 30 gauge needles to make the smallest prick and then I milk the blood out but you might want to use 26 or 28 gauge at first. I watched this video of Peanut A LOT before I finally got it: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...to-get-a-blood-sample-starring-peanut.175369/

@PerfumedCatMom Thank you!! I will check out the video! I tried the warmed up sock, but she hates the sound of the rice moving around in the sock. I have had zero luck with the lancing device, but I didn't know that they had clear caps that could go on them. I might try that out, it may go much better than what's happening right now lol. I thought doing it by hand was going smoother, until it was no longer going smoother.
Our bond is fine for now, she's still cuddling with me and sleeping on top of me, I think she is just starting to get really really agitated anytime I try. To be fair to her, it hasn't been a one and done ordeal.

While you wait for more experienced folks to stop by, have you checked out the dosing method sticky? It may be worth reading to see the dosing methods generally followed here. FWIW, lantus works best when dosed twice a day so hopefully you can find a dose that gives you numbers you're comfortable shooting twice a day. Are you able to get a "before bed test" (i.e. a +2 or +3) in the evenings? Those tests really help give insight to the PM cycle.
  • If the +2 is about the same as the Pre-shot, usually they're going to have a fairly "normal" cycle...slowly dropping to nadir and then slowly heading back up until the next PS
  • If it's higher than the PS, that can indicate the beginning of a bounce and those are the cycles where you can usually get by without testing as much
  • If the +2 is lower than the PS, that's your "early warning"....those are the cycles where it's important to try to get more tests in (i.e. set an alarm for later in the cycle to test)...but if you can't, you might want to leave some higher carb food down for him
Hope that helps some. You're doing great taking action with Moo Moo so quickly :bighug:

Have you read the dosing methods used here? With SLGS and bring new you would stall without feeding and retest to see if the BG comes up in 20-30 minutes. Did you feed?

I do think since you have needed to skip you should lower the dose. How much depends on which method and if you can test. I saw constipation is a problem from your most recent post. Has it resolved? Did you call your vet?

I was waiting to see if the constipation was also present today, which it was. She is still passing some stool but it's small, hard, and only little once or twice a day. So, I am calling my vet in the morning and seeing what he says. She is peeing a normal amount, eating a normal amount, and drinking a normal amount from what I can tell. It's just the poop that's concerning me.

I can give a before bed test, if she lets me. I have been attempting them at +4, but it hasn't been going super well (she is getting agitated when I go to test her)

It's already almost an hour and a half after her shot time, so I did feed her. I will read more about the SLGS method. I knew it stood for Start Low and Go Slow, but I didn't know many of the other details.

Thank you so much for the links! I will read them right now.

I find that the cat will take on whatever fear or stress you feel. I would calm myself and her by singing a lullaby or a Christmas carol. It works! In lieu of the sock you can also rub her ear with your fingers--Ruby loves this as much as the warm sock!

This is the lancing device I bought with the clear cap. Total game changer! https://www.amazon.com/Care-Touch-Adjustable-Lancing-Device/dp/B01DMFLHI8/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

@phakewishard Have you tried giving Moo Moo a small amount of raw egg yolk to get things moving, if she has no known sensitivity to eggs? I’d start with 1/8 tsp and see if that helps. Don’t over do it.

You can also buy egg yolk powder from Food Fur Life. Great product for many reasons; my cats are fed balanced raw and have no constipation or vomiting issues but I give it to them daily.

@Marje and Gracie No, I haven't. The vet is supposed to be returning my call in about 15-20 minutes. I don't believe she has any sensitivity to eggs (I do, so I don't keep them in the house since I can't eat them lol), so depending on what he says I may get a 6 count egg carton to try it! If it goes well, I'll look into the egg yolk powder!!
Thank you!!

You’re welcome. Unfortunately, many vets are not aware of this simple way to help get things going. Good luck. :)
