Here's the spreadsheet, just inputting it all again as some how lost the USA option.

Basically today the vet told me to up my cats caninsulin from 2.5iu to 3. He has had a massive drop in the space of two hours, and I'm really unsure what to do now, as it's likely to drop further?

What should I do from here?

*I asked the vet about switching insulin, and my vet and the other vet are both adamant that we are better to stick with this for longer

I panicked and gave him some hills glucose dry food.. and he was up to 18.5 within 20 minutes.

His lowest numbers seem to occur at about 4 hours after his shot, so he still had two hours to go before he got to his lowest.. I hope I did the right thing. Worried I either acted too fast and made things worse with the dry food, or I potentially didn't do enough :(

***another question for anyone who might be able to look. The vet raised his dose based on his numbers from yesterday which were high despite the 2.5 dose. But is it possible that the blue numbers caused him to have a bit of a bounce the following two days, rather than him needing his dose raised?

Did you take a second test to confirm that 4 reading? If you get an unexpected number it's a good idea to check again. I'm pretty sure it was not accurate and was probably really in the pinks.

3 units is probably ok but we would have suggested you try 2.75 first for a few days.

Hi Natasha,

I'm too inexperienced to be able to offer you any advice for this situation, but one of the many things that makes this forum so invaluable for me is that it provides these Hypo instructions so you can see exactly what to look for and what to do. If you are giving a cat insulin you would be wise to read them over carefully and keep a printed copy with your "hypo toolkit" in the event there is no one online who can help you during an emergency.

Triple checked it, was definitely 4. It is a human meter so potentially actually a bit higher. I wonder if the machine was potentially glitching? It said 4 on the dot all three times. Will pop it back in my signature once I get it fixed (currently re filling out the original template)

OK I think I will do this and just keep an eye on it. I feel like he hasn't had much of a chance to adapt so would rather do it gradually and see a better pattern.

Thank you, I'll get onto it right now!

You're correct. The higher numbers were triggered by the blues. Caninsulin is quite good at yanking down numbers so it can put a dent in the middle of a run of high numbers. The yellow and blue nadir readings you got before are much better indicators of the safety and effectiveness of the 2.0 and 2.5IU doses.

I think you were right to intervene when you got that 4.0 reading as at that point in the cycle there was still plenty of room for a further drop. How is Meowmeows feeling? Sometimes drops that fast and steep can make kitties feel a bit icky.

I would not give the 3.0IU dose again.

thanks for this Mogs, this is exactly my gut feeling about it. I think I've seen enough times with his numbers a huge drop in the first two hours so I don't really doubt the 3iu pulled him down that fast. Going to stick with 2.5 and hopefully we start getting the blue numbers again and maybe the bouncing will stop with a little time. This point I'm a bit meh about discussing with my vet at every instance, so I'm just going to see how we go over the next week. Thanks so much for reassuring the direction I'm planning to go. He is a little bit cranky and tired, and very thirsty today, 1.5 hours after insulin today and he is in the high reds, so I suspect he's in overdrive from the low yesterday (so far I suspect meowmeows is going to be a bouncer, if it doesn't stop I'm going to request an insulin change/find a vet happy to do it).

Thanks again!
