12/18/20 - Squeaky!! AMPS=291 +7.5=99!!!!!!! PMPS=273 +6= 451

@Wendy&Neko Is it time to increase? No greens this cycle, that we could see. I know, there may have been some. But Squeaky does okay with 4 ear pricks a day. Last time we had a green/blue cycle and tested frequently, he had a terrible reaction with shakes, twitches, fear, etc. So I think, it's better for him to actually BE green and blue and less important for me to know the exact details.....

Is it time to increase?

Thanks a bunch.

???????

So, I might need to travel from Denver area to Albuquerque because my mom isn't doing well. I thought she was doing better but now it doesn't sound like it. I might be going to say good bye.

I'd have to bring Squeaky along because there is no one here who can manage this complication.

He's not much of a traveler. I'd have to sedate him with gabapentin for the drive. I heard 100 mg 2 hours before travel. It's a 7 hour drive, more or less.

We'd have to stay in a hotel and I'd be leaving him in the room during most of the day, when I would be visiting my mom. I have a cat playpen I can put him inside with blankets, his food and a litter box. We'd be together at night. I could likely pop in a time or two during the day. I suspect he'll be sleeping mostly anyway.

What do you think this kind of stress will do to him? Thanks for your thoughts.

Sorry to hear about your mother. :bighug:

Tagging @Olive & Paula who travelled a ways with Olive when her husband had surgery - she had a great playpen.

I also travelled with Neko - for SRT (radiation therapy). It was 9 hour drive each day, for three days in each direction. I used Feliway spray in her carrier and also gave her Rescue Remedy 1/2 hour before leaving each day. She was a lot better traveller than I thought she'd be. She used to complain on the 10 minute drive to the vet! One of our members who had to commute with her diabetic kitty each week, later put together a document on Travelling with Diabetic Cats. Leo hated travel, but calmed down once settled in.

I can't help you with your questions, but just wanted to say I'm really sorry to hear about your mom. :bighug:
I’m sorry about your mom. :bighug:It’s hard to say how he will respond. I’d try to keep him high enough so you won’t need to worry about him. He will recover once home again.

Thanks Elise, Bhooma and Wendy for your good wishes.

Thanks Wendy for the info and document link. I printed it out and will study it. Wow 9 hours a day, three days in a row? Egads. Not only Neko but you. Strong and brave.

I went with DH, so one could pay attention to the cat while the other drove. We were expecting it to be much worse than it was. I think by the time it was clear we weren’t going to the vet, she relaxed a bit. The upside of the trip, after that we took her for a couple little driving trips, knowing she would be OK.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm not sure what kind of car you have, but if you have room for a small dog crate, you can let squeaky be in there for the car ride. We took Jax with us last weekend (his first trip in 12 years :joyful:) and his numbers definitely went up a little bit but he recovered when we got to our destination and when we got back home. I also put litter in a cardboard box lined with a pee pad and used a bungee cord to hold it in place in the crate - to our amazement, he used it (though litter was everywhere...we just vacuumed the car when we got home. we also had to stop when he pooped because it stunk up the car lol). Here's a pic of Jax in his crate.

You'll figure it out and squeaky will be a trooper :bighug:

@Jan D & Squeaky I didn't have to travel that long, only 2 1/2 hrs one way. Ollie stayed in her carrier for car ride. Carrier is part of a stroller so it was big enough for her to sit and lay down. I had an enclosed pop up playpen when she was in hotel during the day by herself. It had her box, water bowl and chip feeder. I put do not disturb sign on door so no one would go in to clean room or whatever. And if they did anyways, she would be safe in playpen and couldn't sneak out door. I could go back to check on her anytime. When I was back in room I let her out of playpen. After her morning shot, and me getting ready, having breakfast would bring us to about +3 so I tested, then went to hospital. When husband got lunch or tests I could pop back to motel, that was about +6 or +7, test her feed her, feed me then back to hospital until her PMPS. Then I was in room until morning. Ollie traveled well though. I called motel and told them I needed a room with fridge. Then because of all Ollie's equipment I needed a 1st floor room with parking in front of door. Since husband was in hospital 2 weeks before surgery I commuted every other day so had time to case out the pet friendly motels. Get deliveries overnighted to house before we went. Everything went smoothly except small glitch coming home with her. It was in July 90 degree heat. When I stopped for rest room, 2 buses of kids pulled in. Now you know how long that would take. Couldn't leave her in car in that heat. So pulled out the stroller took her in with me and waited until I could use handicap stall. She did great the whole week. Even had better numbers.

Few tips. Use disposal litter box. Put pan liner in it. Have mini whisk broom with dust pan. Puppy pads. Plastic tablecloth or shower liner (from dollar store) to put under playpen to protect bottom in case something might be sharp in carpet (like staple or paperclip). Dog poop bags to scoop into. Roll of paper towels. If you have time get the Frio insulin wallet in case there isn't a fridge or ice easily accessible. fridge thermometer. I got a locking lid plastic organizer box (like for crafts) for all her meds and insulin equipment. Jug of litter. Took my hard copy of ss to keep track of tests, meds. Bought her records with me in case she needed a vet. Stopped in vet that was close to talk with them ahead of time in case I needed them. Took honey an tube of cake icing with me. Took all food with me, for her and me (microwavable for me). I'm sure there are more things I can't think of right now.

Thanks so much, Susanne and Paula. @Olive & Paula Wow all you guys are turning into my best friends, you are all so considerate and nice..... :):bighug::bighug:

I talked to my sister today, she thinks my mom is just depressed. I'm sure my visit will cheer her up and give her something to look forward to. What a boring year and then twice in the hospital.

I was inspired by Suzanne's photo to get out a cat playpen that I have and put it in the car. We did a test drive today and it went well. I think I followed most of Paula's suggestions about plastic underneath and such. I'm a little on overwhelm at the moment with all the details. I think I need a bigger car to take everything! However I think it will go well. Thanks for all the tips, everyone, I'll be referring to them in the next several days!

As much as you can get together and have in case you need to run out the door the better. I had 5 days at home to pack everything up, get house key made for neighbor to take care of cats staying home. Make all the phone calls needed in case device was going to be implanted (story in itself). Having counseling and financial evaluations done in case device was implanted. Home evaluation. Getting info for notifying local first responders, electric company. Getting group of neighbors willing to be trained to help in case of emergency until responders or Medic Flight could get here. My dad who was in assisted living but confused and delusional at the time would wonder where I am. No one would be responsible for Ollie, so it was best she came with me. I'm sure UPS didn't like all the deliveries everyday to me in the middle of nowhere, having to walk the packages up to the house.

I know lots of people use crates in their cars. Personally I don't. I feel it's to much room for them and if standing and for some reason driver has to swerve fast or stop short, animal is knocked off balance and can get hurt. I've seen pics of crates get bent from impact with dogs head or legs caught in the wire frames. Or frames get popped open from banging around in car.

Hoping you only need to visit and it makes your mom happy.

Let me know if you have any questions.

So what do you use instead of crate?

I used her carrier in the car. It's the basket of a 3 in 1 stroller. I have to think of looking for another, after 5 yrs it's starting to wear.

Then the playpen when in motel.

Hmm, I have a similar playpen, only smaller in size and not as tall. I put that in the back of the car for Squeaky to have some room to move around. And a small litter box in there. I was also going to move that into the motel room for when I'm out.

I do have a stroller, but it wouldn't fit in the car. Too tall.

What you have will work just fine. The stroller I have comes apart. The basket/carrier comes off stroller frame. So any of my cats are fully contained when transferring from house to car to vet it motel room etc they are never loose unless in house or closed room. The carrier itself is 14" high, 18-2O" long. And holds 30 lbs. I got it for my 18 lb I couldn't carry in a regular carrier. Tux and PJ will fit together for a short time if needed. The frame stays in my car as I was constantly taking someone to vet. But after PJs visit next week I can take it out. Oooh I will have back seats again.

Wow that stroller sounds more user friendly. I should probably sell mine he doesn't like it anyway.

Squeaky is so old, weak and his legs aren't working well, so that I have little worry about him scampering away.

This will be a challenge, but we'll do the best we can and however it goes is how it will turn out. Thanks for all the tips.

This is the one I'm thinking of getting maybe next year. The price is holding me back. My current one was only $76 but they don't make it anymore. I need the carrier to come off the frame so it can be a carrier. Non negotiable. And carrier compartment needs to be high enough so kitty can sit up.

Wow that would be great. Yes I'd get a whole bunch of new stuff for Squeaky, if he weren't already my biggest expense in life. LOL.

Paula, what about transporting insulin? Taking it in a cooler with blue ice, should that be good enough?

Also ideally we will be leaving around 7 am, but his shot isn't until 9:30 so I will have to test and shoot in him the car. Any thoughts about that? We will be straying so much from our usual routine, I'm considering this will not be easy. Thanks.

When are you leaving?

In cooler is fine. Just make sure insulin doesn't touch the ice/ice packs directly. Will you be able to refreeze blue ice for trip home? You have to think of return trip also. If planned it shouldn't be to hard.

Options for insulin: Others will chime in.

1. If transporting for vacations, adoptions and trip is long. Most people say not to give insulin. Because of stress, not eating, don't want low numbers while traveling especially if driving alone. Ollie didn't get any when driven from Canada to me in PA. She was also in normal plastic carrier entire day.

2. Give 1/2 dose night before and 1/2 dose morning of.

3. If you can monitor and be able to park for some time in case of low numbers, keep routine (not recommended).

Traveling with insulin. If you can manage having one of these is great. Not just for traveling but also for extended power outages. Only needs air to work. I had extra large since Ollie in beginning got 9 units, I had 2 boxes of pens at all times. So I planned for 10 pens. We lost power alot. I got it as soon as I adopted Ollie, even before she got here. Just in case. I didn't know Ollie was high dose then. Used it a few times.

Only issue is shipping now. Everything is running late, even next day, priority shipping. Something to think about for future trips though.

Thanks Paula, Hmmm can't order that. Hotel has kitchen. So yes can refreeze blue ice.

I've started another thread on this topic so others can chime in!!!!
