Methyl B12 & diarrhea questions

I put Howie on methyl b12 and folic acid (instead of Zobaline) this summer as he had some hind leg weakness. He’s been on it daily even though that weakness went away. I know I’ve read that it doesn’t work as well if the cat is not regulated which Howie is not. Should he continue to stay on it if the weakness has gone away or is it OK as a daily supplement for him?

Also, Howie has problems with diarrhea and soft stool more than I would like. He gets S Boulardii which helps! But when I try to ween him off, diarrhea comes right back (which is what I’m dealing with right now). I’ve read opposing articles on whether methyl b12 does anything for GI tract problems as I know there is also Cyano b12 (which is regular b12?). For anyone who has more knowledge and experience than me on this, what should I do? Assume methyl b12 is not helping him? I want to get his B12 levels tested next. Thanks!

I would stick with S Boulardii daily. If it helps, no need to get him off of it. I give Minnie the b12 methyl daily too even though her neuropathy has gone away because I just like to be safe. As far as b12 deficiency, the methyl won’t help with that. For that you need the liquid b12 that you inject into them once every 2 weeks or so. Minnie is on all 3.

Thanks for the info and feedback! I appreciate it!

Does Howie have a GI tract issue like IBD? I also think getting him tested for b12 deficiency wouldn’t hurt because then you’ll know for sure if you need to start the injections. I get my b12 liquid from Chewy

Methyl- and cyano- are related. They are simply at different points in the metabolic pathway for B12. Typically, cyanocobalamin is indicated for GI issues if there's a problem with malabsorption. If you've gotten a GI blood panel, typically they assay B12. You would then know if Howie needs B12.

Generally, there's not a problem with giving B-vitamins. They are water soluble and unless you are giving huge amounts, whatever isn't used, your cat will excrete.
