Is this the correct amount to draw (pic inside)

It says 40iu per 1ml caninsulin.
The needle is the same as in the picture U-40 1ml/40iu.

I am just wanting to check I'm correct in drawing up to the 2nd notch (3rd notch from the start notch), to get 2iu.

Writing this *think* I'm 99.99% correct, but I'm reallyyyyy bad at math, just want to confirm. Thanks!

Can you post a picture of the syringe you're using? It's been a while since I've used U-40s. I believe they don't have half units, and the first notch indicates 0 so the third notch would be 2 units but I want to be sure.

Those syringes hold a lot and will be difficult to use. Yes you would go to the third line for 2 u if there is a zero line, but I recommended going just to the first line until you start testing at home. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.

Try syringes that hold 1/3 ml (12 units) with half unit markings. Much easier to see and much easier to do fractional (0.25, 0.5, 0.75) doses.

I'm assuming my vet gave me these so it would be easier to read because the caninsulin is 40iu a ml with no conversion. I agree it's kinda ridiculous to use such big ones for a tiny amount. I'm going to buy smaller next time

Re the dosing, my cats glucose was 29.8 not sure how that converts in USA terms I'm based in aus. But everything I've read, including the caninsulin documentation, says 2iu is huge and potentially not necessary. Not sure at all why my vet has instructed this amount, I'm waiting for the glucometer to arrive tomorrow so I can see what exactly is the affect. I check in with my vet next Friday. I'm tempted to give him 1iu and tell the vet I misheard the instructions, but at the same time I feel like I should trust my vets instructions, any advice on what you would do in this case would be great..

not sure if relevant to the high dose, but I was told there was a huge amount of glucose in the urine when I took him to the vet earlier in the week at time of diagnosis

Vets just have a tendency to start higher than recommended, it's not unusual to see vets recommending 2u to start but it ends up being too much for most new diabetics so we prefer to start lower, max 1u. I think I would "mishear" your vet as well.

And that picture does look like it's at the right notch for 2u, so I'd do the second line to make it 1u.

The smaller syringes will be so much easier to use. They are the same length but the barrel is thinner so it holds less. That means the numbers are spread father apart and easier to read. The ones I showed you are still u40... No conversion needed. Just a different size barrel. 1 unit is still the same 1 unit in the ones you have.

To get to us numbers you multiply by 18. So our numbers you would divide by 18.
