Didn't increase this morning but may tonight. I was reading on Lyla's thread about insulin potency but I doubt that's the case here...I think my pen is from the end of August and has been in the fridge on a shelf this whole time. I do have more pens so I could also try a new one for a cycle or two to see if that matters.

Any thoughts @tiffmaxee @Marje and Gracie @Wendy&Neko ?

Hugs to all the kitties & caregivers :bighug:

Usually if the insulin is bad the numbers are really wonky. Jax's SS doesn't look like that. I think it's up to you on how low you want the nadirs.

Thanks, Carla - I didn't think it was the pen. I'll probably increase tonight but we shall see what the day brings!

Rarely is it ever the insulin...but we always find it easier to think it is don't we? Even I have had that suspicion...and then Luci proves me wrong...every time.

I'm sure you'll have a better feel for it by tonight's dose.

Have a great day!

I switched pens twice because I was thinking it was the insulin too. Of course mine had air bubbles in them from my hand slipping and pushing air in, so I do think it was the case for one of them. I started using the 3rd pen right at the last couple of days I think.
Good luck with the new dose if you decide to increase. Jax, come on back to the lagoon. There's nothing going on at the beach. Have a great day, Susanne :)

It's true, we always like to think it's the insulin. :bighug:I think for me it's the need to have a reason that I can control. :)
Wendy said in my thread that there have been reports of vials pooping out after 5-6 months. I'm not sure if that's the same for pen cartridges...but those have less insulin in them so tend to get used up quicker. My vial is 10mL (just over 1/3 of an oz).
Hang in there. You'll figure out the best decision to make for Jax. :bighug:

Thanks everyone :bighug: Yeah I don't think it was the pens like I said in my original post but just threw it out there since it was on my mind. I'll probably increase him tonight to nudge him down :cat::cat::cat:

Morning Susanne , if you decide to increase, good luck, I had to increase Tyler a lot
before getting to where he is right now. Have a good day :bighug::cat:
Totally get it. Thanks for bringing hope :D And good to remind myself the cat needs what the cat needs. And he's still in great numbers so yay for that.

I once had a cartridge go bad. It had been on the road for six days, in a cool pack, but it was high summer and chances are it got warm. Neko's numbers started drifting up quite noticeably over the space of a week. Fortunately (?) at that time, her dose was such we were burning through cartridges fairly quickly so it wasn't a big deal just to start a new one. Jax's SS does not look like insulin gone bad.

Thanks Wendy. I think my stream of consciousness detracted from my increase question. His nadirs are still about same as last dose so I was going to increase tonight. Think that’s okay?

I don’t think it’s the insulin either. I don’t think you would see all that green if it was. I’d increase unless he surprises us by PMPS.

Is it one big air bubble or multiple small air bubbles?

I ran out of insulin during the height of COVID and summer, so I used an older bottle that I had in the refridgerator until I went down to Mexico when the border opened. The expiration date wasn't near, but I'm sure I'd had this vial for about a year. Anyway, Chloe got the best numbers she'd ever had when I used it. I remember being told that vials are only good for 6 months. I was told that the pens only last for 1 month and if they're in the fridge unopened, they can last for at least a year. They're also not as susceptable if you forget to put them back in the fridge for a couple days.

It was one big one
Oh, I got that in mine. When the insulin is used, the pen fills with air (How the air gets in, idk). I try to hold the pen at about a 45-degree angle to get the bubble out of the way and so I can see where I'm poking. I stick the needle in. Then I overfill and pull out the needle quickly so the insulin isn't sucked back into the pen. Then I squeeze out the syringe until I get to the right mark. If nothing comes out, I empty the syringe and try again until I see insulin coming out of the needle. It took me a long time to learn this even after watching the video. A physicist might be able to answer these questions.
