Hi Patty,

I've only just seen this (had someone here with me so wasn't online).

What level of carbs did you feed Blue for his brekkie, and how is he eating today?

I fed him the I/D and a small amount of Friskies pate to get him to eat the I/D. I shot at 9:30 and plan to test +1 which is 25 minutes from now. I just got scared because when I went to bed he was higher than when I got up. He ate great. His tummy is less firm today and I'm debating on if I need to take him in for a recheck.

Patty, you steered Blue almost the whole way through the cycle. It looks like he just surfed his way to AMPS.

:bighug:

FYI, sometimes cats on Lantus have a 'mini dip' towards the very end of the cycle.

I forgot what to do to stall. Wait 30 minutes and retest? Don't feed I think???
Stall, don't feed.
Wait 30 minutes.
Test again.

If necessary, stall again.

For future reference, you're looking for a natural rise in numbers before you give the dose.

Patty, I think you did a great job last night. I was too tired and needed a break so wasn’t on the board. I would have told you to go to bed provided he was not fed for an hour or two. I don’t think he dropped. I do think had you stalled this morning without food he might have dropped and you would not have been able to shoot. I’m glad that you did.

How’s he feeling? Did you stick with mostly lc and mc last night?

Now that I know the rise is due to food, what should I do?

Test in 30. He wasn’t that low when you shot. People shoot anything over 50. You don’t want to give syrup at this point unless he drops to the 50’s in the first 4 hours. After that I would stick with mc at the highest. If a reduction is earned so be it at this point. I’m hoping shoot low to stay low will be true. You should have a nice flat cycle. This is when Lantus works best.

Elise, could you explain a little more about this, because my understanding is that the current FDMB orthodox view is to delay until numbers rise. Could you give a few pointers of why it might be OK in certain circumstances to dose on a falling number, please? (Looking to learn here.)

I actually ran out of the 10% and 13% Meow Mix so gave him the 16% Meow Mix. I'm trying to stay with one brand so less tummy issues. He also loves Meow Mix. What do you think? I should try LC?

Thank you. I debated about going to bed.

The reasoning to not stall is that cats usually will drop without food making it impossible to shoot. With lots of data like Patty has, if you shoot and give a little mc to start it’s shown to be a nice flat cycle. She could have stalled for no more than 20 minutes to make sure he didn’t drop more but then she would be right back in the same situation. I’m being very conservative by testing in 30 because we know Blue can drop early. Usually the advice is get a +1 and +2.

Once I’ve had my coffee I will find some good posts Marje has written about this.

I called the vet this morning. I wanted to ask about pain medication. This is the message I received because I missed the call.

“Hi Miss Gilmore is Holly calling from animal medical center I spoke with Dr. Johnson and she said unfortunately since she wasn't here on Saturday she would you know in order to give any sort of advice about blue she would want to see him um so if you want to bring him in today just give us a call let us know 770-963-7363 thank you bye-bye…”

I spent $250. On Saturday so you'd think they would call me back.

I think you're absolutely right to be very upset, Patty! I'm upset for you, too.

:bighug:

When you call back, go for 'smouldering rage'.

I just called. The doctor that saw Blue on Saturday is not in today, you were correct Elise. I said I was just wanting some pain medication. I'd have to bring him into the office. No charge? Yes, an exam charge.

Arm yourself with this:

IDEXX Feline Pancreatitis Treatment Guidelines

IDEXX are a world authority on feline pancreatitis and the above covers all the meds and other treatments used to manage the condition. Internet sources don't get any more legit than that.

Thank you. I'm still fuming. I think I'll have to email this and then go elsewhere. There is a practice closer and it's won Best of Gwinnett 2016,17,18 and 19. It's not a cat only vet but that's at least 10 miles away or more.
I'd rather be able to get to the vet faster than that in an emergency. Am I spoiled?

This is so wrong. Darn Covid makes it impossible to interview vets face to face. I would ask to speak to your vet directly. I’m fuming for you. I would understand if you hadn’t been there so much lately. :banghead::arghh::mad:

I do think it’s possible that all the different foods he’s been getting might be making him have intestinal issues. But it could be a little pancreatitis too as it hadn’t bothered him before. I just changed my mind. I’m betting on pancreatitis. It can cause diarrhea too.

I was reading about interviewing new vets and this below was one of the criteria. I didn't understand about the Convenia because Blue is on it presently, is it not a good medication to give?

15) Will the vet respect your wishes about not prescribing certain medications (e.g., Metacam,
Convenia)? Do you get push back about not wanting to use these medicines?

I know convenia is feared. My vet gave it a couple times to Max because he didn’t want to have intestinal problems from oral antibiotics. He said he never had any issues. I was always scared whe I gave the ok.
