Advice please....

Some info - she is about 13, only one tooth, big but not overweight, not very active and nothing seems to motivate her . Pretty routine life... she doesnt seem stressed or anything. Also never really ravenous for food.
Only eats fancy feast turkey and giblets pate, chicken and liver pate, and the odd seafood pate. Also only purebites chicken and duck or boiled chicken for treats and snacks.
She was on a high dose of caninsulin for 4 years before recently switching off kibble and to lantus.
She is a super star with testing but prefers only to get her needle in her scruff (we are working on other locations). Looking for advice to get some more constant lows...blue ones or dark green .

Hey Dana! Thanks for posting here from the FB group!

It would have been nice if you'd used our "World" spreadsheet that automatically converts to US numbers but that's OK.

You're holding the dose too long. Even on Start Low, Go Slow you wouldn't hold it longer than 7 days. On Tight Regulation, you could increase every 3 days if you're not getting the numbers you want.

Here's explanations of TR and SLGS. It will help us to help you if you decide which dosing method is best for you (you can always change later if the one you try first doesn't work for you)

By holding a dose that's not working too long, you allow glucose toxicity to set in. That's basically where the cat's body learns to be at higher numbers even with the insulin.

I would go up to .75 and always get at least 1 test on the PM cycle too. You've done a pretty good job but missed a few. Most cats go lower at night so it's important to get at least that one "before bed" test every night.

It would also help us if you'd fill out your Signature real quick. If you look below our comments, you'll see some basic information about our cats. It keeps us from having to waste time asking the same questions over and over again.

Find your sign on name (top right of page). Click and there's a drop down menu to choose "Signature". This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.

A new box will come up for you to enter information like:

Your name/Cat's name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, insulin type, meter type, food you're feeding, any other health problems or medications? and last, the link to your spreadsheet.

Then "save" the whole thing!

And if you don't mind, please change your blue columns to white text, its really hard to see

Where do you see blue columns that are hard to read?

I did notice something else though. I don't know if this is an error in the formatting from the other group you got this spreadsheet from or what, but on your AM cycle, you have an extra column between +6 and +7 that shouldn't be there.

Ok... so i should change the dose to 0.75 and if I dont get better numbers/ blue numbers after 3 days then increase to 1?? So

I changed the writing in the blue numbers to white and remved the extra column... i think i did that today by accident.

It wouldnt let me link my spreadsheet.... tried linking and pasting it right onto the signature. Neither way would work.

More advice please. Its been 6 days and her numbers are so inconsistent. Should i raise her dose to 1unit????....or hold off for another day or 2? Also, is if safer to raise her dose during the day or evening? Missy's spreadsheet

Hi Dana & Missy! Nice to meet you.
When I read your first post on this thread it reminded me of my sugar cat, Douglas. No fuss cat but numbers stayed consistent regardless of food/dose. After posting on here and a quick visit to the vet, Douglas has slight inflammation of the gums due to plaque build up so it was recommended to try to brush his teeth. This is a slow process to get us both use to it, along with using PlaqueOff on his food daily. Have you ruled out any infection/inflammation as this can affect insulin effect.

I would say to increase up 0.25, and was advised every 7-10 days after a curve (which I do at home). I also increase dosage in the morning so I can monitor during the day if needed.

I was thinking about if anything could be bothering her. She only has one tooth so i doubt its that. She was at the vet less then six months and checked out ok.

I do wonder if things like my other kitty eating dry upsets her. My other cat is a cancer kitty and needs to put on weight so he is on kitten kibble. He was on wet with her but he lost 1kg in a month. He is probably a perfect weight, but being an old man cancer kitty i feed kibble as well trying to keep his weight from dropping more. She really misses dry.... i have to clean the floor after he eats or she will lick it for any crumbs.

I think you could go up to 1.0 and although usually the first shot of a new dose doesn't cause any problem, it's probably best to do it in the morning when you're available all day.

No, cat's don't think like that (although sometimes we could swear they do!)

UTIs are another common culprit. From Missy's numbers it looks like she's spending some time over the renal threshold (somewhere over the 11ish mark on a human meter, 14-16 on a pet meter). If over the renal threshold glucose spills into the urine and that provides a fertile environment for potential infection.

Last night she was ok... this morning she is at 10.8 (192).... waited 25 minutes and how she is at 10.4 (185).
Should i feed and shoot 1unit??? or 0.75??

I do keep an eye on that as well becaue it was mentioned at the last vet appoinment that her urine was a bit acidic 5.5
But she is such a great water drinker... on top of eating watered down food.

Missy tested 11.8 (212) 20 minutes after shot time so I gave 1 unit and will keep and eye today.... and test as needed.

It's great that Missy drinks well, but keep in mind that good fluid intake/output doesn't guarantee absence of a UTI.
