Hi Sally,

I understand why Gill has asked the above question. Based on how Lily has been running, she's on the high side in the first half of the cycle after the large preshot feed, but then not high enough later on to get her PM insulin dose.

IIRC, yourself, Elise and myself had a brief discussion about Lily's feeding schedule a few days ago. Based on the data you've gathered in the interim I think that it's got to the point where you need to consider feeding Lily small LC feeds at various points in the cycle, not just at brekkie and dinner, so that it will balance out the Lantus and the insulin her pancreas is producing and even out her numbers. This should provide the support necessary for her to receive enough insulin safely, the goal being to help her the rest of the way towards remission.

Can you let us know your thoughts on this please, Sally?

Yes I can do. When should do you suggest I feed her?

I would suggest to start giving her say half at PS, then dividing the rest into 3 mini meals given bat +2 +4 and +6

Would that be possible?
You may need to adjust depending on what her BG does.

You want to avoid feeding in the latter half of the cycle if possible as it can have the undesired effect of bumping up the numbers for ps.

Yes, I can try that. I will have to feed separately but we will figure something out..

Would she eat again at her PMPS?

Yes she would eat again at pmps and you would feed her in the same way in the evening cycle

amps main meal
+2 mini meal
+4 mini meal
+6 mini meal
pmps main meal
+2 mini meal
+4 mini meal
+6 mini meal

George is still fed in a similar way even though he has been in remission for 4 years, the small regular snacks are easier on their pancreas, and helps level their BG. So it's probably something that you will continue to do when Lily gets back to remission. I use an automatic feeder so he can get his snacks at night and if I'm out for the day.

Thinking about it I guess I can put Lily in one of the other bedrooms at night and if I am away and feed her that one. Hate to separate them but we need Lily healthy.

Suggestions for timed feeders:

Petsafe 5

Catmate C500

Worth checking both eBay and Amazon for best price. (Batteries not included for Petsafe 5, don't know about C500.)

During the night and when you're away, the timed feeder will rotate to offer the next mini meal at the scheduled time. Also, they can be set to rotate to an empty compartment 2 hours before the next dose is due, thus ensuring that the next preshot BG reading isn't food-influenced (very useful on the PM cycle, no need to rise 2 hours before the PS BG check is due in order to lift any left-over food).

Timed feeders are a gift from the diabetic kitty gods. :cat:

That's what I have to do with George. Otherwise he will eat everyone elses food.

There's an offer on the petsafe (if you are in the US) https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/petsafe-auto-food-dispenser-5-meal-good-deal.239064/

That sounds doable! Thanks for these suggestions Mogs! :bighug:

He ate small meals often because of pancreatitis [...] I think it helped level out his bg too
Ditto for Saoirse. The pancreatitis dictated her feeding schedule (PS, +3, +6, +9). If I left her any longer than 3 hours between meals she'd start vomiting up clear foam due to stomach acid build-up - something our previous vets told me she would "have to get used to." (Latest in a long line of problems I had with their approach to cats - including their losing my beautiful Danú. Within a fortnight of the 'get used to it' incident they were no longer our vets.)
