Does this mean remission?

My cat is 15 years old and has been on a lantus pen 1-3 units for 1.5 years. His numbers in the past few days (we have a hard time obtaining) have been low. I don’t have a spreadsheet and need to learn how to make one.

Was advised no insulin below 150 range.

close to remission but your kitty still needs insulin.
ETA AND THAT is just by looking at numbers posted. There really no way to tell without tracking shot by shot, day by day.

If you need help we have people that can get you set up in minutes. Just let us know. With a human meter, normal bg is roughly 50-120. Cats that go into remission successfully run 50-80 mostly. Have a look at our dosing methods on the Lantus board and all the yellow stickies at the top. Also look at fine dose shooting. We usually go all the way down to a drop before an OTJ trial.

Hi Rascals Mom,

From your opening post:

11/16 50 8am
11/17 148 8:30am
11/17 156 8:30pm

11/18 244 8:30am 1 unit given
11/18 93 8:30pm
11/19 131 8:30am
11/19 154 8:30pm
11/20 148 8:40am

[Emphasis mine]

Rascal may have gone lower than 93 between the BG readings I've highlighted above.

While you're getting your ducks in a row I'd suggest asking your vet ASAP about using a lower dose than 1 unit and also I recommend that when you do give a dose of insulin that you also test BG in the hours following the injection, particularly in the period between +3 and +9 hours after the dose was given to see how low the dose may be taking Rascal.

Thank you so much! I will ask her. I’m not sure if she’ll reply over the weekend. Should I keep it at 1unit until I hear back or is it safer to skip for now. Night time scares me the most, since we’re asleep.

He’s incredibly hard to get readings and give insulin to, so I think that’s why they did the pen style. I’m willing to do anything for him though.

I can’t thank you all enough!

I'm not familiar with the Lantus pen (I used U100 syringes). Is it possible to give a dose of 0.5 units with the pen?

A lot of people use the Lantus pens like a mini vial and use a u100 insulin syringe instead of the pen needles. This allows for dosing smaller than 1 unit increments.

Thank you everyone. I called the vet and awaiting a call back. I’ll hold off insulin for now since I don’t have mini syringes.

I’ll message back as soon as I’m done feeding him!

THAT and one of these. I promise they both will serve you. :bighug:

Very good and I didnt mean to bug you. No worries I'm glad youre getting help! :bighug:

Oh I didn’t take it that way at all! I appreciate any advice and help

Spoke to the vet. She wants us to continue on readings through Monday. If he jumps to 300+ then give 1unit but she wants to see how he handles a few days without insulin.

Not going to lie, I’m pretty nervous. Tonight I got bit and clawed up pretty bad, and poor Rascal bled a lot. I think I hit a vein
