Dosing help?

I understand that dosing is based on the nadir, not the AMPS or PMPS, but Marley has never had a number shoot this low (SUPER EXCITED!) and want to make sure I don't wake up to a 911 in the middle of the night or miss one.

Before anyone mentions it, yes I know I haven't gotten a lot of mid-day numbers. I just moved, I'm in school full-time, I just got a new job, and just found out my dog has cancer. I'm really doing my best to at least test before food and test mid-day when I can.

My question: Is it safe to give him his full 2.5 units tonight? With him never having numbers this low, I'm terrified of him going super low overnight.

Can't see your SS to tell what the BG's are now or have been in the past. The permissions have not been set up correctly. Once you fix that, we should be able to see the SS.

Yes, fixed.
You can shorten the link name. Simply type in a "Short Name" like Marley's SS. Then the step where you link to the Google sheet, when you have copied that link, paste that name into the text box after where it says URL. I copied the steps from the setup instructions for you below.

Instructions for pasting the SS link in your FDMB Signature block:

1. Login to FDMB and click on your user name in the upper right corner.

2. Select "signature”. The signature block is limited to three lines. If you have a lot of other information in your signature block, please be sure you place the spreadsheet link so it is easily located by other members (i.e. please don’t stick it at the very end of a long, detailed description of medications).

3. Put your cursor in the text box, type in your kitty’s name with the word “Spreadsheet” (e.g. Furbaby’s Spreadsheet), highlight those words, and then click on the “hyperlink" icon above the text box:



4. A text box will open that states "link"; paste your link into the box next to “URL” and click on “insert”.



5. This should result in the highlighted text turning light blue which means it is now a hyperlink to the spreadsheet and anyone clicking on it can see the spreadsheet.

6. Click "save changes" and you're done!! Great job!!!! If you need any help at all, please send me a private message by clicking on “Marje and Gracie” (to the left under Gracie’s photo) and then “Start a Conversation”. I am more than happy to help you or do the Spreadsheet for you.

That question is hard to answer. You don't have much data to tell you how low the 2.5U dose takes Marley.

So the standard questions apply.
Do you have plenty of test strips?
Do you have your hypo toolkit all stocked?
Could you stay up or set an alarm to get a later BG test?

The "decision point" BG levels for this Prozinc ISG group is a number < 150, where you would stall without food and retest in 20 minutes.
Are you able to do that?

Is Marley's appetite good?

Unfortunately I cannot stay up or get up. I have work in the morning and go to bed soon. I can test again now, though and see. Then give it to him and test before going to bed.
 
Sometimes, you do the best you can.

As we tell people, you hold the syringe, so the final decisions are always yours.

You may want to look into buying an auto-feeder. That would allow you to program it to open during the cycle and offer a fresh meal while you're at work (or sleeping)

I'll look into it, but have 4 other animals. I considered one with a microchip detector, but apparently Marley's body is an EMP that destroys microchips. He has two and they aren't detectable. He got 1 done 6 years ago and it worked fine until about 6 months ago, then it just quit getting detected. They did an x-ray to see if it maybe got pushed out by his body, but nope: it's there, just can't be detected. So they gave him another one and that one isn't detectable either. He's been a wild ride this year lol.

His appetite is very good. He's for the most part a pig except when he's feeling off.

Are the other animals "meal fed"? No high carb food left out for them to graze on? Only low carb food?

You'd be surprised how sneaky diabetic cats can be about getting to the food from other animals.
There was a person earlier this year that did not think their diabetic cat could jump up to the place where the other cats food was located. But, she put a camera on the spot, and caught her diabetic cat eating the high carb food.

So, getting all your animals on a low carb diet could immensely help Marley.

I have two microchip feeders for my two cats, one sugar and the other civvie who eats 50% wet and 50% dry. I highly recommend it, as you will not only be able to separate Marley's food from the other cats but you will also know exactly how much he is eating, which is important to monitor with his diabetes. Both feeders came with RFID collar tags in case the pet is not microchipped. If you can get him to wear the tag on a little collar, that would solve this problem.
